Job Title: Assistant Chief EngineerJob DescriptionThe Assistant Chief Engineer oversees the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems and equipment while providing leadership to the engineering team. This role supports a Class A office building of approximately 500,000 square feet in downtown Baltimore, serving professional tenants such as law and accounting firms, as well as a very busy medical office environment. The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a key role in maintenance planning, staff supervision, budget management, and coordination with property management and contractors.Responsibilities
• Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems to ensure safety, reliability, and optimal performance. • Supervise, lead, and manage engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, coaching, and supporting their professional development. • Create, implement, and routinely update a documented plan that includes preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance procedures for all building systems. • Participate regularly in client-facing communications and collaborate closely with the property management team to address building and tenant needs. • Lead, create, and manage the engineering budget and actively participate in the overall operating budget process. • Assist in the development and execution of a capital improvement plan for building systems and infrastructure. • Select, schedule, supervise, and direct contractors, monitoring their work quality, documenting performance, and ensuring compliance with building standards. • Respond effectively to emergencies, service calls, and urgent building issues, providing timely solutions and clear communication. • Lead, organize, and maintain ongoing technical, safety, and operational training programs and procedures for the engineering team. • Perform other duties as requested by the property management team and client stakeholders to support building operations. Essential Skills
• Proven experience as a building engineer in a large commercial or medical office environment. • Demonstrated ability to oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment. • Experience supervising engineering and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, and performance management. • Strong background in boiler operations, with the ability to safely manage and troubleshoot boiler systems. • Maryland stationary engineer license, minimum 3rd Grade, with 1st Grade license preferred. • Ability to develop and maintain preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance plans and documentation. • Competence in managing engineering budgets and contributing to overall operating budget planning. • Experience coordinating and supervising contractors, including scheduling, oversight, and performance documentation. • Capability to respond quickly and effectively to building emergencies and service calls. • Strong communication skills for regular interaction with tenants, property management, and other stakeholders. • Commitment to safety standards and ability to lead technical and safety training initiatives. The facility includes professional tenants such as law and accounting firms, as well as a very busy medical office environment, requiring high standards of reliability and responsiveness. The position follows a Monday through Friday schedule, typically from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with shared on-call responsibilities for callbacks; coverage does not occur every weekend but may vary due to medical operational needs and occasional shift changes. Employees are responsible for their own parking arrangements. The work involves regular interaction with building systems, boilers, and other mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as coordination with contractors and property teams in a professional, fast-paced setting. Appropriate work attire is expected to align with a professional medical and office building environment, including safety gear when working with building systems and equipment. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
