Job summary

Applications are invited for a 12-month appointment as a Clinical Research Fellow in Ophthalmology basedwithin Newcastle Eye Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The main aim of this post is to assist with a number of clinical trials and to develop new areas of clinical research. Currently ongoing trials are primarily in the fields of medical and surgical retina, oculoplastic and orbital surgery and glaucoma. The post has a good track record of providing clinical and research experience and giving opportunity for presentations and publications. Previous candidates have gone on to secure prestigious clinical fellowships. The department has a thriving research team, and is well resourced with excellent diagnostic retinal imaging equipment. There may be an opportunity for cataract surgery and bespoke clinical exposure, alongside the research activities, depending on interests and experience.

Main duties of the job

The post is available to commence from August 2026. There is no on call banding.

Job description Job responsibilities

The aim of these posts is to support clinical trials, be involved in research projects and gain clinical experience. It is expected that presentations and publications would be forthcoming.

There is no on-call commitment for this post. GCP certification is required.

Provisional Timetable:The timetable includes research clinics, personal research time, and clinical activities depending on interests and experience.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications Essential

Primary Medical Qualification. Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants). GCP Training.

Desirable

On GMC Specialist Register. Part 2 FRCOphth. Previous experience in NHS.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge Essential

Good history & examination skills. Able to formulate a working diagnosis. Able to order appropriate investigations. Image interpretation relevant to practice. Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague. Clinical ophthalmology experience

Desirable

UK based run through training with satisfactory ARCP outcomes. Previous experience of medical retina work, including intraocular injections. Previous experience in undertaking oculoplastic and thyroid eye disease clinical assessment. Ability to interpret retinal imaging.

Maintaining Clinical Competence Essential

Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.

Teaching Essential

Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research Essential

Experience of audit projects. Experience of research.

Desirable

Audit outcomes. Evidence of presentations and publications.
