We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.The Newcastle Diabetes and Endocrinology team seeks a medical doctor for a full-time clinical fellow post exclusively devoted to the specialty, with no core inpatient or ward cover requirements. This post has become available after specific funding has been acquired from the directorate.
The post is unique in that it is designed specifically to maximise exposure to the specialty through regular attendance and participation in outpatient clinics, as well as specialty-specific inpatient exposure (e.g. diabetes in-reach ward rounds and Endocrinology Programmed Investigation Unit activity). There is a wide variety of subspecialty clinics and clinical activities available with the post having the flexibility to allow the medical doctor the choice to develop his/her own subspecialty interests. If desired, there is the option for out-of-hours ward cover on-calls to acquire banding for salary purposes.
Main duties of the job
Newcastle has a high-profile Diabetes service with national recognition of clinical excellence and a nationally and internationally celebrated research programme.
Inpatient diabetes is located at both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospitals while the Diabetes Centre is located at the Freeman Hospital and provides high quality outpatient care alongside support and liaison with colleagues in primary care.
Specialty clinics include the full range of diabetes care as well as interests in islet cell transplantation, diabetes technology, immunotherapy, diabetic kidney disease, cystic fibrosis alongside groundbreaking clinical research in the treatment and prevention of Type II diabetes. We are the regional centre for kidney pancreas transplantation and Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), and a national leading centre for islet cell transplantation. We also do ground-breaking clinical research in the treatment and prevention of Type II diabetes.

Job description Job responsibilities
The Endocrinology department is located at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and specialises in all aspects of clinical endocrinology including thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, thyroid eye disease, endocrine genetic conditions and pituitary disease.
Endocrinology is par excellence a multidisciplinary clinical field, and combined endocrinology clinics are held weekly to monthly with ophthalmologists (thyroid eye disease), paediatric neuro-oncologists (late effects of childhood cancer therapies), geneticists (monogenic endocrine conditions), neurosurgery/ENT surgeons (pituitary tumours), thyroid surgeons and oncologists (thyroid cancer), hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons (gastrointestinal and pancreatic NET tumours), adrenal surgeons (paragangliomas and phaeochromocytomas) and paediatric endocrinologists (adolescent endocrine transition).
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications Essential
MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification. Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
Desirable
MRCP or equivalent. Other relevant qualifications (ALS, ATLS, NLS, PALS). Distinctions. Scholarships, prizes, BSc (or equivalent). NHS paid work experience.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge Essential
Good history & examination skills. Able to formulate a working diagnosis. Able to order appropriate investigations. Image interpretation relevant to practice. Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Management and Administration Experience Essential
Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce. Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues. An understanding of Clinical Governance.

Experience with audit Evidence of leadership / project management Evidence of having implemented change
Teaching Essential
Experience of supervising junior staff. Ability to teach clinical skills. Able to contribute to teaching and learning of others in the clinical setting.

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research Essential
Experience of audit projects.
