Job summary
To be an efficient and flexible member of the Histopathology laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of qualified members of staff.
To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality
Main duties of the job
To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Medical Laboratory Assistants ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Take part in the all areas of the Laboratory.

Job description Job responsibilities
To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Biomedical Scientists (BMS 1 and above) ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
To perform accurate preparation, pre and post and analytical procedures as defined by the departmental procedures including storage of paper records and ensure that images are recorded
To undertake manual preparation of Histological samples including:
Specimen reception and data entry.
Assisting with specimen dissection
Blocking out processed specimens
Cutting
Special stains
To prioritize and plan own workload including to identify and expedite urgent and priority samples and communicate own work priorities within the team.
To be able to accurately enter and retrieve data from the laboratory computer and manual record systems and comply with relevant legislation regarding data protection.
Liaise with other Pathology departments, wards, GPs and other service users regarding non analytical problems with samples. To undertake routine daily maintenance of equipment,

Qualifications Essential
GCSE Mathematics and English or equivalent and a basic science based qualification IBMS Certificate of competence/ Foundation degree in Biomedical science
Desirable
Previous experience Histopathology laboratory experience in routine laboratory techniques
Experience Essential
Experience in microtomy and embedding Awareness of Health and Safety in relation to clinical laboratories
Desirable
Awareness of UKAS/Clinical Governance
