About this role

Job summary

A full-time post for a Senior Head and Neck, Thyroid and Parathyroid Oncology Fellow is required at the Royal Derby Hospital site of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, to work with a dynamic and supportive Head and Neck team to deliver and develop cancer services and provide advanced surgical training.

This subspecialist fellowship programme provides advanced training in Head and Neck Oncology, Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) using the Da Vinci Xi system, and complex endocrine surgery. UHDB performs more than 150 thyroid operations per year, making it one of the highest-volume thyroid and parathyroid surgical programmes in the East Midlands. The programme operates in close collaboration with Endocrine Surgery for complex parathyroid cases with intraoperative PTH (ioPTH) monitoring.

This fellowship is exclusively open to candidates with a background in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (ENT). Applicants must hold the FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent and must have completed or be near completion of specialist postgraduate training in ENT, possessing the surgical and clinical competencies to function at a senior middle-grade level in a Head and Neck Oncology unit.

Main duties of the job

The fellow is expected to work closely with resident doctors in ENT.

The fellow is also expected to provide second tier on-call cover.The role can be tailored to the training needs of the fellow including cross specialty exposure, if required.

As a Head and Neck fellow, he/she would be expected to attend Head and Neck clinics, work up patients and present at Head and Neck MDT and get involved with overall management of head and neck patients.

Job description Job responsibilities

The ENT Fellow will undertake general and specialist clinics. They will have allocated theatre time with the opportunity to undertake surgery lists independently. They will also assist with consultants undertaking major head and neck surgery.

This is an appointment to cover from August 2026- August 2027. Possession of the MBBS, GDC, plus full GMC registration with Licence to Practise at the time of application is essential.

The elective work involves daily ward rounds, time-tabled sessions for day case, theatre and outpatient clinics. Whilst it is not a recognised training post, this post is well supervised and there are opportunities to learn and develop skills.

This post will participate in the ENT On-call rota.

The post will be based at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Applicants should either have a minimum of 4 years training in ENT in a Specialist/Specialty Registrar placement (NTN holder) or be post CCT or eqivalent Previous experience in Head and Neck Oncology or Orofacial Deformity & TMJ At least 6 months experience in a UK Health Care setting Hold full registration with the GDC & GMC at time of application and hold a license to practice
