About this role

Job summary

Working as part of the Estates Directorate, the post holder will work closely with colleagues across the Trust to manage energy consumption and support the develop of estates net zero plans to meet Trust sustainability targets.

The Energy and Net Zero Manager will drive the development and implementation of the Directorates net zero plan, ensuring alignment with NHS Net Zero goals and national policy. This role will lead cross-functional initiatives to reduce environmental impact, improve resource efficiency, and embed energy management into operational and strategic decision-making across the organisation.

The post holder will design, plan and deliver environmentally, socially and financially sustainable change, leading a programme of work to support the Trust to deliver against it's sustainability ambitions.

The Energy and Net Zero Manager will have significant experience of delivering sustainability goals in large, complex organisations. They will be a subject matter expert on energy and net zero for the Estates Directorate.

The post holder will also take a quality improvement approach to net zero, considering how colleagues across the Trust can make improvements where they work to support the Trust to become more sustainable.

Main duties of the job

You will have extensive specialist knowledge, expertise and experience in energy and net zero/sustainability, and have experience of leading the implementation of net zero programmes across large, complex organisations.

You will be a highly experienced leader, with experience of engaging and influencing senior leaders and large groups of staff at all levels.

You will be experienced at communicating and reporting, including at Trust Board level.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications Essential

A graduate (level 7) qualification in in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience or willingness to work towards Extensive post qualification experience/specialist knowledge of engineering services and estates decarbonisation/Net Zero. Educated in the management of projects in line with fixed programme, agreed budgets and government best practice, i.e., PRINCE 2 Practitioner or equivalent demonstratable experience or willingness to work towards. Demonstrable commitment to continuing personal and professional development

Desirable

Registered as member with a professional body such as the IET, IMechE, IEMA, etc. Other relevant professional qualifications relating to Energy, Sustainability, Carbon Reduction, Electrical or Building Management Systems

Experience Essential

Experience in the management of budgets in line withstanding financial agreements and the procurement of services using traditional quotation and tender processes. Excellent communication skills with evidence of producing Business Cases and Strategy Documents. Demonstrable experience of working in energy management related function Knowledge in managing energy contracts, and UK ETS compliance and EA compliance requirements. A good understanding of energy management project management experience working. Proven ability to plan and manage energy usage within a complex health facility. A good knowledge of estate management and energy management strategies. A knowledge and understanding of NHS Guidance, Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memoranda and Statutory legislation relating to estate and energy management. Ability to communicate with multidisciplinary teams of professional operational staff

Experience of managing operational services within the remit of SFI's / SO's in a healthcare environment Experience of leading and managing committees & forums

Skills & Knowledge Essential

Understanding of specialised practices, policies and procedures some of which are highly specialised to specific Estates, building and engineering installations and require expertise within the specialism, e.g., Disability, Discrimination Act, Health & Safety, Climate Change Act 2008 (2050 Target Amendment), energy demand reduction, and heat decarbonisation etc. Experienced in the management of revenue and capital budgets in line withstanding financial instructions ensuring that value management is achieved. An understanding of the fundamentals of Quality Improvement methodology including the use of root cause analysis and the Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle. Demonstrable knowledge and passion to deliver engineering solutions to achieve Estates Net Zero by 2040. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work proactively and cooperatively with senior management, clinical staff and other staff at all levels Demonstrable self-awareness, an understanding of impact on others and ability to manage self and maintain professional conduct in difficult and challenging situations. Evidence of involvement in successful sustainability funding bid processes. Competent in the use of IT packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) A clear understanding of the use of performance metrics to drive improvement Ability to access, analyse and translate to different teams, complex data and information to facilitate service improvement Highly developed and effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to devise and manage the delivery of training programmes. Highly motivated and resourceful with a proactive approach to problem-solving. Self-motivated and has the ability to use own initiative to motivate others to deliver sometimes challenging outcomes. Ability to work within a changing environment.
