Trust Registrar (ST3-7 Level) in Critical Care
August 2026 for 6 months with option to extend
The James Cook University Hospital is a 1000 bedded, tertiary referral, Major Trauma `Centre situated at the top of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. It has 33 general critical care beds accepting regional referrals including major trauma, spinal injuries, neurocritical care and vascular and upper GI surgery. The unit treats around 2000 critically ill patients per year with excellent outcomes. The Critical care unit at JCUH is consistently rated by trainees as one of the best in the UK for teaching and training. The critical care unit is recognised for advanced training in ICM and offers a variety of teaching activities. Fellows are able to develop skills in ultrasound and echocardiography with mentors available to support FUSIC accreditation. The department supports a very active research programme and opportunities exist for publication and research participation.
This post would suit candidates who have completed their core training and wish to build their CV and experience in readiness for a career in ICM or the acute specialties. Main duties of the job
We can offer fellowships in POCUS, Medical Education, Quality Improvement, Research or a combination of these (see further details below). As a large tertiary training and research centre, we are able to offer a wealth of opportunities. We anticipate tailoring your fellowship to your requirements.
The successful candidate will provide day and out-of-hours service on the middle-grade rota with the support of the other middle grades and critical care team. The quality of training you will receive during on-call and day shifts is renowned. The clinical time will provide additional opportunities to see and practice the application of your special interest to the acute management of critically ill patients. Grade, pay scale and rota will depend on the suitability and previous experience of the applicant, but is expected on the ST3 to ST7 scale. For illustration; the rota is approximately 1 in 10 nights. During out of hours work you will supervise 4 resident doctors, alongside another Registrar, with support from the duty Intensive Care Consultant.
