About this role
Job summary
Please note that this vacancy will close when we receive sufficient completed applications.
The Senior Clinical Fellow posts in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care are based at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The posts are agreed for six months initially with potential for extension subject to review. These posts are ideally suited to senior anaesthetic trainees in possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) who are looking to gain further experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care medicine and are considering a career within the specialty.
Clinical experience will be afforded by time spent in both cardiothoracic theatres and intensive care unit. There are a significant number of transferrable skills for all areas of anaesthetic and critical care practice that can be developed through experience with cardiothoracic surgical and critically ill cardiology patients. These key skills will be invaluable in the safe management of sick and unstable patients as one progresses through training positions of increasing seniority. We also encourage and support the development of skills and accreditation in critical care ultrasound as many of the Consultant body are both TOE and FUSIC mentors/supervisors.
Main duties of the job Daytime work will be apportioned between the cardiothoracic intensive care unit, cardiothoracic theatres and GA cases in the cardiac cath labs. Consultant supervision will be provided in line with clinical competence and previous experience. Out of hours, the primary responsibility is to the cardiac intensive care unit; however the opportunity for supervised emergency cath lab and theatre work is available. There is a hybrid rota of anaesthetic registrars and ACCP's covering the cardiothoracic critical care unit on a 1 in 9 rota which is EWTD compliant and receives appropriate banding. A typical on-call shift will consist of two residents from: Trust grade doctors, advanced critical care practitioners (ACCPs), rotating anaesthetic specialty registrars and senior advanced trainees in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. Cardiothoracic surgical registrar support is also available 24/7 alongside support from the general anaesthetic and critical care teams.
