About this role

Job summary

We are excited to launch our state-of-the-art Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre, designed to transform elective surgical care and increase our capacity for elective surgery.

This purpose-built facility features:

6 modern operating theatres equipped with advanced surgical technology 12 dedicated recovery bays providing high-quality post-operative care A streamlined elective surgical pathway focused on safety, efficiency, and patient experience which are aligned with our Trust values. The multiple PACU's at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust provide post-operative care for a wide range of surgical specialities including; Robotics, Gynae Oncology, Brachy Therapy, Hepato-biliarily and Maxillo Facial surgery to name but a few.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking motivated, forward-thinking professionals to join our growing team of Band 6's. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a brand-new PACU service and existing PACU services in the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will provide a high standard of Post Anaesthetic Recovery Care to all patients following a variety of surgical procedures in Main Theatres, Day Surgery and outlying services, reflecting individual competencies and education, ensuring that care is evidence based and patient centered.

Assist in the management and organization of the nursing service in the clinical areas including the teaching, coaching and management of more junior staff or those in training, and on a regular basis to take charge of the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit.

What We Offer

1.1 To provide high quality, research based, individualized patient care at all times for a group of patients.

1.2 To provide a problem solving approach to patient care, ensuring that care is evidenced based and in line with trust policies procedures standards and guidelines.

1.3 To prepare the clinical environment to meet the requirements of the post anaesthetic patients and anticipated workload.

1.4 Ensure drugs and equipment including resuscitation equipment within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit is available, checked regularly and maintained in safe working order.

1.5 Ensure safe and appropriate use of oral drugs, intravenous drugs, epidural analgesia and patient controlled analgesia in the management of post-operative pain for patients within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit.

1.6 Offer assistance and guidance to ward staff on the management of PCAs and epidural analgesia in the absence of the Acute Pain Team.

1.7 To effectively administer both epidural and Intravenous Patient Controlled Analgesia prescribed to adult and paediatric patients.

1.8 To act as a leader, advisor and role model to less experienced staff.

1.9 Support the post anaesthetic /critically ill patient within the post anaesthetic care unit utilizing advanced nursing skills such as vena puncture and cannulation, administration of intravenous drugs and invasive monitoring.

1.10 To assist in the control of cross infection by adhering to departmental policy regarding dress, the maintenance of a clean working environment, decontamination and sterilization procedures and asepsis.

1.11 Provide assistance in clinical procedures, guiding and supporting junior staff and taking action additional to own work role, where appropriate.

1.12 Provide immediate post-operative care, to all patients within the post anaesthetic care unit.

1.13 Under the guidance of senior staff provide initial emergency care, to all levels of critically ill patients both adult and paediatric entering the post anaesthetic care unit.

1.14 To work and provide help and assistance in the Day Surgery Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and outlying service areas.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse Part 1 or 2 / City & Guilds 752 / NVQ Level III in Operating Department Practice Degree / Diploma or evidence of equivalent experience Evidence of recent professional updating and relevant personal development Practice Supervisor IV Additives Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Paediatric Intermediate Life Support (PILS)

Desirable

Practice Assessor, Mentor Prep or equivalent ALERT Management Qualification

Knowledge Essential

Demonstrable experience in Post Anaesthetic Care, HDU or Critical Care Experience at Band 5 CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development Ability to liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team Evidence of Advanced Skills in Practice i.e. IV Additives

Knowledge of Clinical Governance Management of Staff and Resources
