Job summary In relation to this post, it is a full time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our department works in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialised pathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.

Main duties of the job In relation to this post, it is a full time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our department works in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialised pathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.

The appointee will have specialist experience in Gynaecological pathology. We have developed the principles of the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to try and achieve full staffing and an equitable distribution of work among the consultants in our department.

Any candidate who is unable to work the full time for personal reasons will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Job description Job responsibilities

We are looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James’s University Hospital.

This is a full time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of the Gynaecological pathology service to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region.

The Gynae team consists of five consultants currently. There is a broad and interesting workload including biopsies, cervical screening programme work and complex cancer surgery specimens. The Gynae pathology team support 3 MDTs - Oncology, Colposcopy (cervical screening cases) and Hysteroscopy.

Applicants should have established skills in Gynae pathology and demonstrable interest and experience in the specialty. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.

LTHT hosts the West Yorkshire Cellular Pathology Genomic Centre and the central laboratory for the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory hub with access to state of the art genomic testing, IHC and FISH. This helps deliver a cutting edge molecular pathology service for our patients in Leeds and across the region. There are academic links with the University of Leeds and multiple opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate pathology teaching. The laboratory scans all histology slides and there is the opportunity for digital home working for part of the time in accordance with Departmental guidelines.

The successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Why you should join our Team Dr Rebecca Millican-Slater is the current Lead Clinician for Cellular Pathology and is responsible to the Pathology CSU Leadership Team as above. Ms Sarah Caton is the Service Manager for Cellular Pathology. The management arrangements are consistent with the Strategic Review of Pathology concerning the role of consultant pathologists.

The Lead Clinician is supported by dedicated leads for medical training, appraisal, clinical governance, audit and research. Lead roles will be strengthened and developed to move further towards a devolved management structure to give individual consultants opportunities for management experience. There is a monthly departmental management meeting with the Lead Clinician, Service Manager, senior biomedical scientists in charge of the different laboratory sections, the leads for Clinical Governance, Training and Molecular Pathology, and the Chair of the monthly departmental Consultants meeting.

There is full support for the programme of MDT and clinico-pathological meetings equipped with internet and email access. There are double-headed microscopes in dedicated rooms, multiheader microscopes and Digital reporting with Powerwall available for teaching. The department has facilities for photomicrography and macroscopic photography and assistance with these is provided by our departmental audiovisual personnel.
