An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Clinical Educator to join the existing education team within Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) Clinical Service Unit to cover maternity leave. We are looking for a Clinical Educator to expand the Infectious Diseases speciality training programme, along with the High Consequence Infectious Diseases simulation training and related clinical competencies. The other part of the role will be setting up our Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) line access training programme, increasing the team resources and training in midline insertions.
Main duties of the job Working clinically alongside members of the nursing staff, you will facilitate them in learning new skills, taking on new roles and responsibilities by undertaking an assessment of the nurses competence when taking on these new skills and providing feedback to the individual nurse.
You will also be working with staff to improve standards of practice in healthcare associated infections (HCAIs), and will be an active member of the Quality Improvement Collaboratives.
We are seeking to appoint highly motivated nurses with a passion for developing staff, who can work autonomously, be flexible, show resilience and has good organisational skills.
The role is both challenging and rewarding, and requires the individual to act as a role model at all times, motivating and supporting staff in their professional development and the delivery of high standards of patient care.

Specialty & Integrated Medicine (SIM) is home to a variety of services at the Trust. There are wards covering the following specialties: General Medicine, Elderly Medicine, Infectious Diseases/Travel Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology. We also have outpatient facilities for Diabetes, Endocrinology, Intravenous Antibiotics, HIV and Sexual Health.
SIM CSU Clinical Education Team
The SIM Clinical education team covers 16 wards. The team comprises of Band 7’s and Band 6’s who love supporting and seeing staff develop and grow to be the best they can be. We have a fantastic team in SIM and really enjoy working together, to support each other and our amazing clinical teams.
What you will bring to the role To support, educate and develop registered and unregistered staff in their clinical role and competencies in order to deliver high quality evidence based care for service users. This role will be focused around J20 & the Infection Diseases speciality, and the OPAT team, both based at St James’s Hospital.
The post holder will contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of education and training of registered and unregistered nursing staff. They will provide support to the leadership of the team.
They will work in collaboration with the senior management team, providing support to the Lead Nurse for Clinical Quality & Education, to maintain and project the vision and objectives of the service and ensure that they are embedded in practice.
The role will involve supporting the creation and delivery of the ID training programme for nursing staff, the implementation and roll out of the High Consequence Infectious Diseases simulation programme, including Donning & Doffing training, PPE/ Fit Testing, and the training and competence in midline insertions for the OPAT team.
The post holder will lead by example, will be responsible for disseminating good practice and actively challenge assumptions, practice and performance where appropriate.
