About this role

Job summary

This is a new, key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and birthing people suffering from grief/loss, trauma or tokophobia in pregnancy and the postnatal period and their families. You will contribute to the implementation of the new Maternal Mental Health Service for University hospitals Tees.

You should be passionate about developing and moving the service forward in line with key recommendations, local and national agenda. You will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills which you will use to develop, lead, and manage care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs, working alongside specialist psychologists and other healthcare professionals.

You will be responsible for providing a service of extra support and care, working in partnership with maternity and mental health services. Care will be based on individual needs, and you will work closely with women and birthing people and families to ensure that psychological support from psychologists is supported by midwifery care in partnership. You will provide professional leadership and to work closely with existing specialist midwives and the wider maternity system to ensure women and birthing people in the Tees Valley region have access to high-quality maternal mental health care.

Main duties of the job

To provide expert care to all women and birthing people requiring mental health support.

To actively promote the development of the Maternal Mental Health Service.

To take responsibility alongside the psychology service for the management of the Maternal Mental Health Service and the necessary data collection, governance and reporting.

To ensure the department provides excellent standards of clinical practice and a culture focused on patient engagement and experience, liaising with the MNVP.

To ensure that you are a visible member of the senior team and that you are accessible to patients, families, and carers.

To promote positive, professional leadership to ensure contemporaneous, safe, and cost-effective midwifery care in accordance with the Trust's Nursing and Midwifery strategy and national strategies including 'Compassion in Practice' (6C's).

To maintain an environment in which operational excellence, learning, research and development and innovation are encouraged.

Leadership and Improvement TrainingSouth Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers leadership and improvement training to all new staff. After you complete these six and a half days of training you will be able to explore further leadership and improvement training opportunities. We also offer a range of additional in-house and externally provided courses and bitesize programmes through our Leadership and Improvement Team.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training Essential

Midwifery degree Midwifery training/qualification to diploma level and preceptorship plus further study and specialist experience Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

Masters degree in relevant discipline Further experience/training in counselling/mental health or trauma informed care

Experience Essential

The ability to deal with and adapt to wide-ranging challenges to provide better and safer care Significant post-graduate experience and evidence of your contribution to midwifery and maternal mental health services

Desirable

Experience of working with a maternal mental health team Delivery and organisation of training, learning and development

Knowledge & Skills Essential

Specialist clinical knowledge of maternal mental health An understanding of current NHS legislation and national strategy in relation to maternal mental health and public health Knowledge of child protection Knowledge of population health and understanding of social and health inequalities and their relation to the maternal mental health agenda Audit and report writing Leadership skills Presentation skills IT skills Ability to use own initiative Time management skills Time management skills

Evidence of project management skills Ability to look beyond existing processes and ways of working to produce more effective service delivery
