Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our / the Point of Care Testing (POCT) department to cover a period of maternity leave. This is an exciting opportunity to broaden your experience in pathology from a different viewpoint, outside of the normal regular main laboratory environment. We are a well-equipped department, providing an extensive repertoire of investigations from Laboratory Medicine including both Biochemistry and Haematology tests.

You will join the Biochemistry / POCT team who are you'll be a part of is a diverse group of Scientists and Associate Practitioners, working together to further healthcare and provide the best service possible for patients. The department works closely with colleagues across the hospital to ensure POC devices are safely used such as Theatres, oncology and the diabetes team.

Southampton Biochemistry is a one of the largest labs within the area and provides a significant amount of specialist testing.

Our service is always expanding and looking to make improvements.

The department is about to undertake the implementation of a new blood glucose and ketone testing system. As part of this role and you will be involved in its this implementation project alongside our routine work.

Job description Job responsibilities

Training will be in the Point of Care department, with further pathology training given as required by the needs of the service. The department is fully committed to your continued professional and personal development, and the diverse training we can offer you will maximise your future employment and promotion prospects. As part of the role:

You will make critical decisions about workflow

You will perform routine monthly audits on POC user behaviour.

Investigation of incidents

Assist clinical staff with training as required

You will be the voice of Biochemistry and communicate with Ward staff and Doctors

You will contribute to providing a high-quality service which consistently delivers tests for critical samples and patients.

We are looking to appoint the successful candidate to band 5.

You will be required to work 37.5 hours per week. The department operates between 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday

We are interested in applicants who hold HCPC registration and looking to broaden their horizons in a comparatively new speciality, covering multiple disciplines and expanding and innovating over time. Full training in our systems will be provided.

Knowledge/experience of Biochemistry or Haematology is desirable but not essential.

Although this role is not classed as patient facing, it does involve visiting wards/theatre areas routinely including ICUs and the Emergency Department. This can, at times introduce new challenges, but we are fully committed to ensuring your health, safety, and wellbeing in all respects and positively representing Pathology.

Qualifications and experience Essential

HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups HCPC registration Evidence of current CPD activities

Desirable

Previous experience in a medical laboratory IT competency (Microsoft, Outlook, hospital IT systems)
