Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for a Paediatric Congenital Cardiac Co-ordinator .

The Paediatric Congenital Cardiac Co-ordinator plays a pivotal role in the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care for children and young people with congenital heart disease.

This role is responsible for coordinating the patient pathway from referral through diagnosis, intervention, and follow-up, ensuring timely access to specialist services and seamless communication between multidisciplinary teams.

The role directly contributes to organisational objectives by improving patient flow, reducing waiting times, and supporting compliance with national congenital heart disease standards. By ensuring accurate data collection and reporting, the co-ordinator also supports clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and service development.

Furthermore, as a Band 6 you'd support a culture of multidisciplinary collaboration, continuous improvement, and evidence-based practice, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care throughout their journey.

The Paediatric Congenital Cardiac Co-ordinator team consists of two Band 6 co-ordinators and two Band 4 support staff, and is supported by a Matron.

Job description Job responsibilities

You'd be expected to contribute significantly to the effectiveness of the wider cardiac team by facilitating clear communication and efficient coordination between cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, specialist nurses, and ward teams.

By ensuring that patient pathways are well-organised and delays are minimised, the role supports the delivery of high-quality, timely care.

Working closely with the cardiology consultants, cardiac surgeons, and the cardiac ward, the co-ordinator helps ensure that all clinical decisions are informed, documented, and executed effectively. You would also support smooth transitions between inpatient, outpatient, and community care settings, reducing fragmentation and improving continuity of care.

Within the department, the co-ordinator enhances operational efficiency by managing waiting lists, prioritising cases appropriately, and supporting service planning and audit activities. This enables the service to meet national targets and regulatory requirements while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and experience.

Through proactive coordination and effective communication, the role helps reduce the risk of delays, missed appointments, or gaps in care, ultimately improving clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. The provision of consistent, compassionate support to families also enhances patient experience and aligns with organisational values of delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.

- Registered nurse with appropriate qualifications and professional registration, with desirable specialist or leadership training.

- Significant post-registration experience in an acute and relevant specialty, including caseload management, supporting learners, leading change, and contributing to audit, training, and service development.

- Strong skills in leadership, communication, prioritisation, problem solving, strategic thinking, and the ability to work effectively under pressure with attention to detail.

- Demonstrates positive behaviours including teamwork, resilience, motivation, and a proactive approach to delivering high-quality care and continuous improvement.

Person Specification

Qualifications, knowledge and experience Essential

Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma) Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice Case load management experience Experience of audit and data collection Experience of managing multiple projects, deadlines and fluctuating workloads Experience of developing and delivering training to a range of staff Experience of change management Computer literate including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications

Desirable

RSCN/RN child qualification . Leadership training e-Camis trained Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor. Proven project management experience Experience writing queries via Microsoft Access
