Job summary

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Unit in North Bristol NHS Trust is located in the Brunel Building. The department functions as the centre for a number of networks including the Major Revision Knee Network (South West North) Knee Cartilage Network and the Severen Major Trauma Network.

The trauma team work closely with orthogeriatrics for fragility fracture patients and with the regional plastic surgery and vascular teams in the management of major trauma.

The elective Orthopaedic service is provided by a team of 38 substantive North Bristol Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust Consultants, as part of a Bristol wide centralised orthopaedic service. The successful applicant would join as an equal senior to all other consultants in the department and the trust. Services include: Primary, revision and arthroscopic hip surgery, hip preserving surgery in adolescents and young adults, Knee joint replacement (focal, partial and total), revision knee surgery, osteotomy, all meniscal and cartilage surgery and ligamentous reconstruction, routine and tertiary complex foot and ankle surgery including replacement. Local and tertiary shoulder, elbow and hand centre, and local and regional centre for complex spinal surgery including deformity.

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) wishes to appoint a fellowship trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in trauma. The candidate should have fellowship experience in this field. This post is a full time 10 PA position.

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered Medical Practitioners (with a licence to practice) and on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee.

The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Maintain Full registration with the GMC Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: -CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview -CESR -European Community Rights Maintain - An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification. Must be on GMC Specialist Register at time of the appointment or, if a Specialist Registrar (SpR) in training, must be within six months of completion of CCT at time of interview. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date

Desirable

Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

Training and Experience Essential

Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). Post-CCT Fellowship/Consultant experience in major trauma Minimum of seven years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Trauma Fellowship Training in diagnosis and treatment of trauma conditions.

Research, Teaching, Publications Essential

Proven teaching ability Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates.

Proven track record in research. Willingness to undertake further research. Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients. Ability to teach effectively Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals. Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.

Personal Requirements (eg. Communication Leadership Skills, Flexibility) Essential

Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team. Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff. Ability to work independently as well as part of the NMSK Directorate. To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels

Other Requirements Essential

Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments.

Further Training, Management, Audit Essential

Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career Experience in audit project and written up Knowledge of Contemporary NHS Management Issues Knowledge of political context within which we operate.

Desirable

Completion of a general management course or programme.
