About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Physiotherapist to join our Hand, Wrist and Elbow Orthopaedic team.

We are looking for a Physiotherapist with specialist musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy skills in management of upper limb conditions and a keen interest in developing their leadership skills and experience.

Ideally, you will have some evidence of leadership skills, service development experience, time management skills and excellent communication skills.

You will be located on a North Bristol NHS site.

Main duties of the job

1. To work as a Specialist Clinician alongside the Upper Limb Surgeon. This would involve working beyondthe usual physiotherapy scope of practice in an Upper Limb Trauma & Orthopaedic Clinic.

2. This involves the clinical management of patients with elbow/ wrist & hand problems referred for a hospital outpatient opinion.

3. As an autonomous advanced physiotherapy practitioner, be responsible forthe examination, assessment and further management of patientsdesignatedby a Consultant Shoulder / UpperLimbSurgeon within an outpatient setting.

4. Provide advanced assessment & patient management which includes listing for surgery, referring patient for further tests/investigations (e.g. blood, x-rays, scans, etc & to other healthcare professionals.

5. To liaise and work closely with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and with other healthcare professionals, referring General Practitioners and Specialty and Divisional leads.

6. To communicate effectively with patients and carers, explaining complex information such as diagnosis, disease progression,prognosisand treatment/management options.

To initiate and participate in audit, research and clinical effectiveness activities to develop professional practice and evaluate service delivery.

Person Specification

Pre-registration education/registration Essential

Degree or equivalent in physiotherapy Evidence of HCPC registration Evidence of Post Grad training in Upper Limb MSK/Ortho

Desirable

IRMER training (Radiation and Ionisation training). Evidence of Advanced Practice Training (eg MSc or MSc MSK modules) Member of relevant clinical interest group eg BESS or BAHT Evidence of training/experienceinworking withadesignated Consultant Upper Limb Surgeon including observation, casediscussionand feedback.

Experience Essential

Band 6 Physiotherapist experience including musculoskeletal outpatients, Rheumatology and inpatient orthopaedics. Band 5 Physiotherapist experience across all core areas of physiotherapy. Experience in examination, assessment and management of complex and varied musculoskeletal pathologies. Experience in communicating effectively with a wide range of patients i.e. ages and pathologies, who may have barriers to understanding, e.g. deafness, learning difficulties.

Desirable

Experience of communicating with Consultant Surgeons - Upper Limb & Trauma, General Practitioners and other healthcare professionals. Experience of prioritising own caseload and working to time constraints in a stressful environment. Experience of research and audit process including evaluation of statistics.

Skills/knowledge Essential

Specialist knowledge of anatomy, physiology and underlying orthopaedic/musculoskeletal/Rheumatology conditions Specialist knowledge of treatment/management options for patients with complex conditions, including indications of onward referral of patients to other healthcare professionals Specialist knowledge of peri-operative optimisation of complex hand/ wrist & elbow patients.

Desirable

Knowledge of Trust and CSP guidelines pertaining to Extended Scope Practitioner working. Specialist knowledge of comorbidities relevant to patient's suitability for surgery and impact of these on outcome of surgery Specialist knowledge of management of post-operative cases, including complications, x-ray findings, expected rate of progress and outcome and appropriate discharge from care. Specialist knowledge of theory and practical usage of musculoskeletal injections, including policy on consent and complications

Personal Qualities Essential

To understand and be able to communicate highly complex information to other health professionals including consultants, patients and carers To determine necessity of tests/investigations e.g. bloods, x- rays, scans and to order these and interpret results for patient. To undertake all aspects of role as an autonomous Physiotherapy Extended Scope Practitioner To demonstrate an advanced level of clinical reasoning and evaluation. To be able to manage potentially stressful or emotional situations in an empathic manner.
