This is a well-established joint post between Bath University and North Bristol NHS Trust with an equal split between both roles.
The post holder will be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing practice-based learning at an undergraduate level and be part of the Critical Care pharmacy team providing a clinical service to the speciality.
This is an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist looking for a unique cross sector position. This joint appointment with the University of Bath will involve working collaboratively with other practice educators to design, deliver and assess practice based learning elements of the pharmacy undergraduate degree course including our very successful Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) model. The successful individual would be required to cover a range of face to face teaching activities and elements of assessment. There is also a requirement to provide pastoral support to students.
Responsibilities whilst working in the hospital include the pharmaceutical management and care of patients in intensive care and theatre environments, training and education, leadership and financial and governance reporting.
The role has a major focus on teaching and potential candidates must therefore have excellent presentation and communication skills, have completed a clinical diploma, and be able to work both at the University in Bath and Southmead hospital in Bristol.
Main duties of the job
Work closely with the Intensive Care multidisciplinary team to develop and deliver the clinical pharmacy service in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, national legislation, and standards. To provide support to the Highly Specialist Critical Care and Theatres Lead Pharmacist with service development, clinical guideline development, audit, training and mentoring. To provide specialist clinical pharmacy services at a high level to the Critical Care Specialty at NBT by supporting the safe and effective medicines provision for Critical Care patients throughout the whole organisation. Design and deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate students on the new MPharm programme in line with Department/School and University policy. Carry out a significant role in the design, development and delivery of practice-based learning in the department of pharmacy and pharmacology. Contribute effectively to University wide developments and innovation in the design and delivery of teaching. To act in accordance with Medicines legislation, the code of ethics of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), United Kingdom Medicines Information (UKMI) standards and Trust policies and procedures. To teach and supervise junior staff such as pharmacists, technicians, students and healthcare professionals. To line manage band 7 specialist and rotational pharmacists working in the relevant areas.

Practice Educator Role
Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students which is informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice, research/study and extensive teaching experience. Includes designing units of study and their assessment regimes, identifying learning objectives and teaching methods, developing materials and resources, including materials for use online, communicating subject matter clearly and encouraging debate. Provide appropriate responses to student interventions during teaching, responding to questions within and outside class times and react pro-actively and positively to changes in course content or delivery. Specific undergraduate teaching in the new MPharm will include: Design and delivery of the experiential hospital visits in MPharm 1; Design and delivery of the Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) teaching in MPharm 1-4; Support for Practice Placements throughout the new MPharm Design, implement and evaluate teaching and learning packages, participate in the development and modernisation of the curriculum, taking a lead in parts of this activity Design, implement and evaluate assessment tools and criteria for courses, mark assessments, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written or oral feedback as appropriate. Mark final assessments as required Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate level student projects as required. Engage pro-actively in on-going professional development both in own subject and in teaching and learning. Act as mentor for more junior teaching fellows or casual teaching staff. In conjunction with the Critical Care and Theatres Lead pharmacist provide, manage and develop a specialist pharmaceutical service to the intensive care unit within North Bristol NHS Trust Attend speciality meetings (such as Critical Care governance reviews) and meetings with Speciality and Divisional management teams as required and produce reports on activity as directed, deputising for the lead pharmacist where appropriate Advise on strategies to ensure cost-effective use of resources and be involved with achieving CIP targets. Contribute to the provision of highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the critical care areas Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure the safe, efficient, evidence-based and rational use of medicines in line with the Trust Formulary and departmental policies so that risks to patients are minimised Deliver specific improvements in the management of patients medication to facilitate the patients transfer from the intensive care unit and eventual discharge Challenge inappropriate prescribing and escalate as appropriate Attend Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) ward rounds to provide pharmaceutical expertise as capacity allows Manages the pharmaceutical care of an agreed cohort of patients as an independent prescriber as required by the critical care service Support and promote antimicrobial stewardship Ensure that an accurate medication history and a full medicines reconciliation (in line with Trust policy) is completed for all patients seen as part of a clinical pharmacy service to allocated inpatient ward(s) Provide accurate medicines information to other healthcare professionals and patients Provide support and implement the self-medication policy for patients able to manage their medications in this manner Deliver effective management of patient's medication to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients. Communicate effectively with healthcare colleagues in Primary care when necessary, as part of this process Maintain medicines management systems in conjunction with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff. Become familiar with and support the operation and functionality of the Phillips ICCA system on the intensive care unit, supporting the specialist Clinical Information System Pharmacist with reporting, review and validation of changes to the configuration of the system as required to ensure safe and effective prescribing in the critical care setting Record all major interventions in line with departmental procedures.
