Job summary Trust grade Doctor / Clinical fellow in the department of Microbiology
Applications are invited for a fixed term Trust Doctor/Clinical Fellow post (ST1-2) at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Department of Medical Microbiology. We are a large Trust and cover most specialties, providing a wide range of experience in clinical microbiology and infection-related medicine.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated junior doctor to join the department. Previous experience of microbiology or infectious diseases would be of benefit, although not essential. This post will offer broad experience in a number of infection-related areas, including in general and specialist fields, infection and prevention control, antimicrobial stewardship and laboratory medicine. There is an active teaching program in the department that the successful applicant will be able to join.
The post will commence as soon as possible after early August and a contract offered for 12 months.

Main duties of the job The Clinical liaison and multidisciplinary team are working within the hospital underpins the microbiology service offered in Leeds. Medical microbiologists have a vital role in ensuring that laboratory activities meet the needs of patients. This is achieved by a daily telephone service for diagnostic and antimicrobial management of individual cases and liaison of significant results to the clinical teams (eg blood cultures, CSF, sterile samples). There is an opportunity to participate in regular ward rounds in critical care medicine, haematology, renal medicine and other specialities under Consultant supervision.
The role also includes liaison with local public health and Infection Prevention and Control teams.
Members of the microbiology daily duty team are allocated to specific roles each morning at the daily safety huddle. Duties are broadly divided into reactive duties (taking calls for advice, authorising non-critical specimen results) and pro-active duties (liaising and authorising critical specimen results eg blood cultures, CSF, sterile site samples). Additional roles, such as attending ward rounds, MDTs, RCAs are also allocated. There is a rota of duties but flexibility is required depending on workload and other commitments.
The appointed doctor will work under the supervision of the Consultant Microbiologist on call and would be reporting to Clinical Lead for Microbiology.

Why you should join our Team The LTHT Microbiology service provides diagnostic microbiology services to LTHT and the surrounding Primary Care Trusts from the Microbiology laboratories, which are based at Leeds General Infirmary.
Specialist laboratory units within this network include:
• Leeds Molecular Mycobacteriology Unit
• Leeds Mycology Reference Centre
• Leeds Regional Virology Service
The appointed doctor will be involved in the provision of a clinical microbiology service to LTHT.
The successful applicant will be part of the medical microbiology team involved in the clinical liaison of critical sample results and multidisciplinary team working within the Trust, providing clinical infection advice, infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship.
LTHT has a number of nationally and internationally recognised centres which include adult & paediatric oncology, haematology and stem cell transplant units, liver and renal transplant, infectious diseases, respiratory medicine and cystic fibrosis units, acute medicine and elderly service, neurosurgery, vascular and trauma centre and the post holder would have exposure to a range of infection services.
