Job summary
The role is to deputise in absence of the lead nurse, including managing daily staffing and skill mix. To support junior staff and coordinating clinics ensuring quality and safety within the department. They will manage appraisal and training and ensuring audits are completed. They will liaise with other members of the MDT and manage complaints and feedback from patients.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will:
Perform visual acuity testing,
Administer prescribed ophthalmic medications and treatments.
Provide education on eye conditions and treatments.
Support patients in managing chronic eye diseases.
Promote eye health and preventative care.
Communicate complex clinical information clearly and compassionately.
Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, and other healthcare professionals.
Maintain accurate clinical documentation using Openeyes
Ensure compliance with professional standards (e.g., NMC Code).
Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain infection control and safeguarding standards.
Supervise and mentor junior nursing staff.
Participate in staff training and development.
Contribute to service development and protocol updates.
Maintain continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications Essential
1st level registered Non Medical Prescribing Qualification Specialist post registration qualification in Ophthalmology e.g. Ophthalmic Diploma Teaching, Assessing and Mentoring Qualification/998 equivalent D32/33 NVQ Btec Mentoring
Desirable
Willing to undertake further postgraduate qualifications. Recognised leadership development programme attendance
Skills and Abilities Essential
Relevant specialist skills and abilities in Ophthalmology.Expert technician in the use of specialist ophthalmic equipment.Proven track record of working independently.Ability to lead, motivate and develop a team of nurses.Responsible for the development of protocols and procedures to facilitate development of the service.Change management.Administration of medication under patient group direction.
