Job Summary This Advanced Clinical Practitioner role sits within the Leeds Institute of Emergency Surgery at St James’s Hospital, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK. You will be at the forefront of emergency surgical care, assessing and managing patients with acute presentations, formulating clinical decisions, and delivering safe, personalised care. Working as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in patient flow and service delivery across the Surgical Division, while also contributing to audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives that shape and enhance our services.

We are looking for a motivated ACP with a completed MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and a strong background in surgical care, who is confident, organised, and able to work autonomously within a fast-paced environment. You will bring excellent clinical reasoning, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support and influence nursing, medical, and surgical colleagues. In return, you’ll gain the opportunity to develop within a progressive, supportive team that values innovation, continuous learning, and high standards of patient care.

This should be no more than 2 paragraphs.

Why you should join our Team Joining the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals offers the opportunity to work within a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment that sits at the heart of acute surgical care. Our team manages a diverse range of urgent and complex surgical presentations, providing Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) with continuous opportunities to develop and apply advanced decision-making, procedural skills, and leadership in patient care. You’ll be part of a supportive multidisciplinary team that values open communication, shared learning, and professional growth, with strong links to surgical, medical, and diagnostic services across the Trust.

What makes our team special is its balance of high clinical standards and genuine team spirit. We foster a culture where ACPs are respected as key decision-makers, encouraged to expand their scope of practice, and supported through ongoing education and mentorship. The work is challenging but rewarding, with a clear impact on patient outcomes and flow through the hospital. If you’re looking for a role where you can make a real difference, continue to grow, and be part of a motivated and forward-thinking team, EGS at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is an excellent place to build your career.

What you will bring to the role The Advanced Practitioner (AP) will use specialist knowledge and skills to provide healthcare independently to patients. The AP is accountable for the total episode of care for patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed needs.

He / she will be required to work autonomously in delivering independent assessment, clinical examination, diagnosis, clinical decision making and planning of care and treatment, diagnosis, prescribing, health promotion and safe discharge of patients.

The post holder will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team and will play an integral role in the operational/strategic development of the service.

The post holder will promote and facilitate evidence based practice and clinical audit and research within the Trust.
