Job SummaryYou will serve as an ELECTRONICS MECHANIC in the ELECTRICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Repairing complex electronic systems and equipment (copper or fiber-based). Performing precision termination and fusion splicing of fiber optic cables; Conducting optical testing using OTDRs, power meters, and related diagnostic equipment to isolate faults and verify system integrity. Troubleshooting systems by following signal paths through complex interconnections of components, assemblies, subassemblies, and connecting cable harnesses shown on schematics. Performing further tests and alignments to ensure the completed equipment is aligned and functioning properly. Repairing of one component often requires further adjustments and alignments of interrelated circuits to ensure proper function and transmission. Major DutiesYou will Install, modify, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic communication and control circuits integral to shipboard electronic systems.You will use a variety of electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital voltmeters, frequency and pulse counters, and special test panels.You will frequently lift and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance from other workers or with weight handling equipment.You will independently determine the nature and extent of repairs required on equipment that is normally complicated by variable and intricate relationships.
