About this role

Job summary PCAL Band 6 to support the Band 5 in the effective running of the service, ensuring full compliance with established SOPs and clinical pathways. The PCAL Band 6 will provide a point of escalation for complex or challenging calls and conversations. Acts as a senior clinical decision-maker, supporting complex patient needs and escalation of care. The PCAL Band 6 will monitor data such as wrap-up time and call length, ensuring these remain within Trust standards through a visible presence within PCAL. They will have overall oversight (office based) to monitor and support delivery of key performance indicators such as patient outcomes, waiting times, patient experience, and documentation standards. The Band 6 will support the Band 7 with roster management and contribute to service improvement by reviewing and developing pathways. This will include working closely with the business team to ensure pathways are up to date and engaging with members of the MDT to ensure they operate smoothly and effectively. The Band 6 is expected to continue taking calls and working within the PCAL service when calls are waiting. The Band 6 will also support students and new starters, ensuring inductions are completed, new starters feel supported within the service, and their SPN period is successfully completed. The PCAL Band 6 will promotes staff wellbeing, retention, and professional development within the team and lead on clinical standards, risk management, incident review.

Main duties of the job Job Purpose

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward / department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or departments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost effective use of resources.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities on the ward or department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
