Job summary We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Blood Transfusion team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (AFC Band 5) or Trainee Biomedical Scientist (AFC Band 5 Annex 21).
This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate looking to develop a career in transfusion science, including those working towards completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio.
Main duties of the job
As a Biomedical Scientist / Trainee Biomedical Scientist, you will:
Undertake structured training to support the completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio (Trainees Only)
Develop core competencies in blood transfusion laboratory practice
Work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team in a busy and supportive environment
Gain exposure to a wide range of specialist transfusion services
Our Blood Transfusion department is fully automated, using Grifols Erytra technology, Gifols Blood Typing Manager, Clinisy Winpath Enterprise LIMS for electronic issue and Haemonetics Blood Track for blood component traceability.

Leeds Teaching hospitals is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the UK with specialties including Haematology and Oncology (Leeds Cancer Centre), Liver and Renal transplant, Cardiology, Leeds Major Trauma Centre, a dedicated Children's hospital and a large maternity service.
The laboratory is approved for training by the IBMS, and we strongly support ongoing CPD and further study.
Information for Trainee applicants: Please note that this role is offered under Agenda for Change Band 5 Annex 21 and will be undertaken with appropriate supervision. Upon successful registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), you will transition into a fully qualified Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) role.
All Band 5 and Band 6 Biomedical Scientists are required to participate in the out-of-hours and cross-site rota, supporting services at both Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James’s University Hospital.

What you will bring to the role As part of the departmental team, you will be expected to perform a range of routine and more complex investigations under the supervision of a registered and experienced Biomedical Scientist.
To communicate clearly and effectively. You will be required to communicate information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organisations.
Use of LIMS, following suitable training, to enter, manage, retrieve, interpret, validate and authorise complex patient information and results.
This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small tools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of clinical material
Assisting in the ordering, receipt and appropriate storage of blood components, products, reagents and consumables.
To establish competency in established procedures and to develop new skills as experience is accrued.
To gain new knowledge through experience, formal study and participation in relevant training schemes including CPD.
To take account of changes in service delivery by demonstrating a flexible approach to work.
