The Day Case Unit is a busy rheumatology department that provides IV treatments and biologic therapies for patientswith long term conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Connective tissue disorders and Osteoporosis.

We also deliver blood transfusions and facilitate other clinics such Ultrasound scanning, Spinal caudal epidurals and are providing additional nursing support to outpatient clinics. Non patient facing work managed by the nursing team includes triaging TCIs, booking appointments, answering telephone queries, blood monitoring, preparing clinics and prescriptions, chasing results, pharmacy stock and stores management.

Main duties of the job

Administer intravenous infusions to patients attending the day unit according to Trust and national protocols.

Liaises with Rheumatology Specialist Nurses to ensure that therapies are given in a timely and safe manner.

Advises on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness and act as a point of contact for patients receiving care from Rheumatology Out-Patient Services

Job description Job responsibilities

Administer intravenous infusions to patients attending the day unit according to Trust and national protocols.

Liaises with Rheumatology Specialist Nurses to ensure that therapies are given in a timely and safe manner.

Advises on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness and act as a point of contact for patients receiving care from Rheumatology Out-Patient Services

Ensures administration arrangements for outpatients attending the department are made safely in line with Trust policies

Takes measures to ensure patient safety, reporting incidents, completing relevant documentation and taking appropriate action to reduce risk to the patient.

Supports the training needs of junior staff in the clinical area.

Always acts in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct highlighting concerns regarding patient care to the senior nursing team.

Is able to work autonomously under the guidance of the Rheumatology Specialist Nurses as well as within the multi-disciplinary team.

To actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, raising and discussing concerns. Actively seeking acceptable and best outcome solutions for patients and ensuring patients and relatives views are heard and taken into account.

Promote a high standard of nursing care adopting evidence based practice following agreed policies, protocols and guidelines.

Practice a high standard of communication including highly sensitive and complex information to develop and sustain partnerships working with individuals, groups, communities and other agencies. Utilise evidence based information through a variety of communication media.

Maintain patient documentation to NMC and Trust standards and requirements.

Acts as a link nurse to other specialities including giving advice as required to both primary and secondary care colleagues

Ensures that the ordering, storage and administration of drugs is conducted with strict adherence to National, Trust and NMC policies and guidelines

Ensures that the department is maintained in good order. Ensures that supplies are adequate and used in an economical and efficient fashion and safe working conditions and practices are maintained.

Takes all measures to ensure the safety of the patient reporting all accidents and incidents and completing relevant documentation. Take appropriate action when necessary

Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse on NMC Register Conforms to NMC requirements

Desirable

Qualification in this specialty

Experience Essential

Experience of undertaking assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care and treatment plans in collaboration with the patient, family and the multi-disciplinary team Rheumatology experience or other relevant experience of working with long-term conditions. Able to demonstrate commitment to high quality patient care

Understanding and interpreting blood results and acting on findings

Cannulation and venepuncture Effective team working

Aware of sepsis pathway and activation of escalation of care
