About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available for a highly motivated paediatric nurse to develop their career within the area of childhood and adolescent diabetes.

The role involves supporting the team to provide care and education in the acute and community setting for children young people 0-19 years and their families diagnosed with diabetes. This care pathway starts from admission and diagnosis, to supporting on going care in the home, schools and nurseries.

The post holder will be an integral member of the paediatric diabetes specialist team, supporting the team to provide care, treatment and education to children young people and their families in the management of diabetes.

You will be part of the transformation in diabetes care and will gain vast experience supporting the team in offering the latest advancing technologies with integrated insulin pump and sensor technology, which a high proportion of the caseload are using.

Working within a small specialist team and as part of the North East and North Cumbria CYP diabetes Network provides an opportunity for close interdisciplinary working relationships as well as building a professional relationship with CYP and their families working within a defined caseload.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the paediatric diabetes team, you will be responsible for the delivery of high quality and holistic evidence-based care to children, young people and their families following a diagnosis of diabetes.

To work under the direction of the specialist nurses, supporting a caseload across North Cumbria, based at the Cumberland Infirmary

To be involved in supporting the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of outpatient clinic appointments, working with allied medical staff, dietitians, psychologist and the team administrator.

Supporting follow-up nurse clinics and being involved in the provision of a nurse led integrated insulin pump and glucose monitoring service using the latest diabetes technologies.

To work in partnership with children, young people and their families offering support, emotional and practical support and liaising with other professionals.

To support the children's diabetes team in achieving all elements of the Best Practice Tariff criteria (BPT) and National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) requirements.

Attendance at the North East and North Cumbria specialist nurse meetings and education days which involves travel to the North East

A comprehensive understanding of safeguarding procedures is required.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Children's Nurse (RSCN RN Child). Up to date Registration with the NMC. Evidence of ongoing professional development, first degree or equivalent experience. Children and Young people's diabetes care module- Level 6/7dgeree level module or willingness to undertake specialist courses/training relevant to practice in diabetes for children and young people to support learning in the role.

Desirable

Experience or relevant degree level study in a specialist community nursing qualification Extended and supplementary Independent Non-Medical Prescribing.

Experience Essential

Experience with registration in acute paediatric nursing at Band 5 or above. Experience of provision of training/education to a range of staff and patients. Knowledge and understanding of child protection issues and procedures Well-developed, multi-professional working skills. Experience of needs assessment/care planning. Experience in managing paediatric diabetes in an acute setting or relevant experience.

Desirable

Experience of working in a relevant area of practice e.g. attending paediatric diabetes clinics Knowledge of insulin delivery and glucose monitoring systems Experience working in an acute and community setting. Experience managing a caseload

Skills and Aptitude Essential

Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate with a range of people including staff, other professional and parents/carers. Ability to recognise and address barriers to effective communication Good organisational and time management skills. Good IT skills and management of Edexcel spreadsheets /Powerpoint and Microsoft Word. Ability to prioritise caseload management and work independently and as a member of a team. Effective listening and counselling skills
