Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant in Anaesthesia within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

The current opportunity is for consultants to join the dedicated Anaesthetics team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in Vascular, Regional, peadiatric and colorectal anaesthesia and perioperative medicine. They will be expected to join the general on-call at Heartlands Hospital or the General and obstetric on call at Good Hope Hospital as part of the on-call commitment. The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Main duties of the job

The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services, if a consultant has a special interest is in Pain medicine then they will have a split job plan between Pain and Anaesthetics.

The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trusts services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours and a full-time consultant will normally devote 8 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.

An example 10 PA job plan is indicated but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.

On Call Commitments

There are several on call tiers to cover the out of hours' service:

1. General on call: 1:19 covering the emergency theatre with a resident CT2 or above

2. Obstetric on call: 1:13 covering the maternity unit at Heartlands with a ST 3 or above

3. Solihull EPOC on call: 1:10 with at ST 3 or above

4. Thoracic on call: 1:8 covering thoracic emergencies at the QE and providing a second pair of hands to Heartlands Hospital

5. Good Hope on call: 1:13 covering the emergency theatre with a resident CT1 or above and the maternity unit with a SAS doctor.

6. There is also an intensivist on call for Heartlands and one for Good Hope.

On - call commitments for this post are to either

The General on - call rota on the Heartlands Emergency theatre (The emergency service sees many general, vascular and urology cases per year.) Paediatric cases over the age of 2 are also cared for.

The General and Obstetric on call rota at Good Hope hospital.

Teaching & Training

The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in the areas of both teaching and research. Our junior anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. Due to the number of specialties covered at the Trust, we can deliver most of the curriculum across our four sites except advanced paediatric cases. We have therefore recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the junior anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

GMC Registration Inclusion on Specialist Registrar or if in training eligible for inclusion on the Register within 6 months from the day of interviews FRCA or equivalent

Desirable

*Evidence of extended training and experience in the assessment and management of patients undergoing anaesthesia in a wide variety of specialties including major general surgery, vascular and urology surgery

Experience Essential

*Experience in the perioperative care of patients *Advanced sub speciality training in anaesthesia for: Vascular or Regional or Obstetric or Thoracic or Major General surgery

Desirable

*Evidence of advanced training in management of the difficult airway. *Evidence of advanced training in perioperative medicine

Additional Criteria Essential

Candidates who are successfull shortlisted and invited to interview will need to provide a 5 minute presentation on: "How to improve theatre productivity and utilisation from an anaesthetics viewpoint."
