Job summary
The Clinical Coding Trainer oversees the delivery of comprehensive training in national clinical coding standards, supporting coders from induction through accreditation. This specialist role requires substantial clinical coding expertise, approved trainer status, and the ability to interpret complex clinical information to ensure coding accuracy and consistency. The post holder also leads internal audits, resolves complex coding queries, and works closely with clinicians to clarify procedures, ensuring high-quality coded data across the organisation.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for training within the Clinical Coding Team (one-to-one training, as well as deliver national clinical coding courses and specialty workshops. To ensure that completeness and quality of clinical coded data are up to the highest standard. To take part in the regular update and development of the Clinical Coding Policy & Procedure Document. To develop effective team working on site and remotely, to achieve and maintain a highly trained workforce to meet national standards and the organisation's requirements. To undertake internal audits to support internal Clinical Coding Audit Policy and assist with external audits. To communicate and liaise with clinicians, service managers, commissioning on complex coding issues.

IHRIM National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) NHS Digital Clinical Coding Approved Trainer A-levels in Science/ Mathematics/ English
Desirable
University Degree, preferably in medicine, science, or related studies / IT Training at Intermediate level NHS Digital Clinical Coding Approved Auditor
Experience Essential
Experience of training and mentoring Substantial clinical coding experience in an acute trust and knowledge of coding a wide range of specialties Experience of leading a team of staff and lead on the appointment of new staff and evidence of delivering performance management within a team structure
Desirable
Evidence of keeping pace with developments in clinical coding and experience in implementing change in clinical coding work practice Experience of working with NHS benchmarking reports and its application to improving performance as well as experience in report writing for internal management or senior executive leads and external bodies.
Skills Essential
Good organisation, presentation and persuasive skills Ability to analyse and communicate complex issues to clinical and non-clinical staff
Knowledge Essential
Comprehensive knowledge and application of clinical coding depth of knowledge in performance targets and the key importance for delivery within NHS organisations Detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology
