Job summary

This Post is for a passionate Consultant Psychiatrist who will be responsible for providing clinical input and leadership to the East perinatal mental health team based at Horizon House, Epsom & working alongside a multidisciplinary team in line with New Ways of Working.

The Perinatal Mental Health Service provides a multidisciplinary, comprehensive community specialist service for assessing & treating women with psychosis & other severe mental illnesses in pregnancy and postnatally across the county of Surrey.

The post-holder will be responsible for overseeing the clinical care of those women residing or registered with a GP within the Epsom & Ewell, Mole Valley, Tandridge, Reigate, Banstead, & Redhill NHS CCGS or receiving maternity care at Epsom & St Helier or Surrey & Sussex Hospitals

Main duties of the job

The postholder will share medical responsibility with other consultant perinatal psychiatrists for providing high-quality clinical care across the perinatal service. This includes assessments of women's mental health & mother-infant relationships & related risks, bio-psycho-social diagnostic formulations, exploration of prevention, treatment & care options, clear communication & shared decision-making with patients (and families as appropriate), communication & joint planning with other professionals & agencies by the most effective means, use of proper legal statutes & powers where necessary for good patient care.

Provide regular clinical supervision to junior doctors working or training in the service & clinical advice & information as & when required to all staff. Actively contribute to quality improvement activities in the service, including national audits and benchmarking.

Participate in the on-call rota with other Consultant staff as agreed in the job plan.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full medical registration with a license to practice. Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification

Desirable

Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications MRCPsych or equivalent Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience Essential

Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice. Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All) Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams. Knowledge of psychiatric provision

Desirable

Published audit or research projects Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service. Experience in management Specific training qualification/certificate or attendance on a recognised teaching course. Peer review or research publications

Eligibility Essential

Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.

Desirable

Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning Essential

Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high- quality care. Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ. A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.

Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
