We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to train as a sonographer in our ultrasound department. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with an interest in pursuing a career in ultrasound.
Main duties of the job
An exciting training opportunity has arisen within the Ultrasound Team at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to undertake Postgraduate Training in Medical Ultrasound at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
The multidisciplinary ultrasound team at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS trust offers a diverse working environment with out-patients, maternity, community sites and a sonographer led in-patient department which is excellent for autonomous practise and experiencing a range of acute pathology. The sonographers are encouraged to rotate through all areas and offer a comprehensive range of ultrasound examinations including abdominal, gynaecological and obstetric.
As a department we love to innovate, develop and improve, and we know the importance of being on the right career pathway. We offer a strong and successful training programme for our student sonographers and encourage extended practise for our sonographers. We have a dynamic team which includes sonographers conducting research to PhD level, and extending their roles within GI, MSK and H&N ultrasound. Clinical development is encouraged and we run regular discrepancy and CPD meetings led by sonographers. Our training programme involves the training support from our senior sonographers, Consultant Radiologists and a dedicated Practice educator.

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual who wants to develop a career in ultrasound. A successful applicant is expected to have high professional standards, the ability to deliver compassionate patient care, possess a high degree of self-awareness and critical problem solving skills. Due to the nature of the role, a level of dexterity is required to fulfill this position.
Applicants must hold a degree in a relevant health care field and health care registration (HCPC/NMC). Post registration clinical experience and knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy would be desirable. The academic component requires registration for the postgraduate course at the required university, with theoretical and practical assessments.
All successful candidates must be able to travel to community sites including Gosport War Memorial Hospital, Petersfield Community Hospital and Fareham Community Hospital.
Any offers made to successful candidates will also be subject to the normal employment checks, approved funding and a successful application to the university course.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
BSc or Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography or BSc in Midwifery. Hold a current state registration certificate (HCPC, NMC). Have a portfolio of evidence.
Desirable
2 years clinical experience as a qualified radiographer or midwife. Previous experience of autonomous practice and leadership.
Experience Essential
Sound technical knowledge of equipment and ultrasound techniques. Sound clinical knowledge. Competent in all aspects of obstetric, gynae, abdominal and trans-vaginal scanning. Good communication and patient care skills.
Skills and Knowledge Essential
Highly developed physical skills (dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills). Good clinical practice. Ability to communicate effectively up to consultant level. Ability to work alone or as part of team. Enthusiastic and self-motivated. Reliable and trustworthy. Good organisational skills. Keen to develop and take on new roles. Professional appearance. A willingness to be flexible. Ability to juggle many priorities at one time, whilst remaining calm.
