Job summary
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery to join our established Trauma and Orthopaedic team. This is a full-time post based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, providing both elective and trauma care as part of a busy and supportive department.
Main duties of the job
The Orthopaedic service is busy and well supported with dedicated trauma theatres running daily, daily virtual and face to face fracture clinics (in week) and sub-specialty clinics and lists.
You will join a team of experienced consultants with a wide range of sub- specialty interests delivering a comprehensive trauma and orthopaedic service to a large local population. The post includes a mix of:
Elective shoulder & elbow surgery Trauma surgery Elective and fracture outpatient clinics Participation in the on-call rota (1 in 16) Supporting departmental service delivery and innovation Supervising and mentoring junior doctors and traineesThere is a strong emphasis on teamwork, and youll be expected to contribute fully to the clinical workload as well as wider departmental activities.
You will have dedicated SPA time to support CPD, revalidation, and professional development.

Job description Job responsibilities
The successful applicant will join the Team as a Consultant and will be expected to participate in all facets of departmental including on-call and will undertake elective clinics and operating to meet service demands.
Clinical Duties:
The post holder will be an Orthopaedic Consultant with a specialist interest at Fellowship level in shoulder & elbow surgery.
The post will be based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. Full participation in teaching, audit and research will be expected.
Education & Research
The teaching and training of Junior Medical Staff is regarded to be of paramount importance by this department. The teaching standards are in line with the agreement between the Trust and Post Graduate Dean. .
It is expected that the appointee would contribute to the active teaching programme for undergraduates/specialist registrars /GPs /junior medical staff and nurses. Monthly audit meetings are held on a rolling basis and are held at Queen Alexandra Hospital. These are attended by as many Consultants as possible and all junior staff, nursing staff and allied health professionals. This is on a rolling half-day basis allied to other specialties within the hospital.
The department plays an active part in the Wessex Regional Post Graduate Orthopaedic training programme, which occurs alternate Fridays during the University term time and is run in conjunction with the Orthopaedic Department of Southampton University Hospital. Teaching sessions are held in Southampton and Portsmouth and once a term in other departments within the region. Time will be made available if the Consultant is required to participate in regional teaching.
The Consultant may be expected to be a named Educational Supervisor for SpRs and other junior posts.
Continued Professional Development
In addition to the Trusts medical library the department holds an extensive library of journals and relevant educational materials to support CPD. There are opportunities to undertake relevant external duties to support and enhance CPD. These are agreed with the Clinical Director and Medical Director.
Revalidation
The job plan includes 2 PAs of SPA during which time the postholder will be expected to complete activities required for revalidation, continuing professional development and audit.
Mentoring
There is a formal mentoring process for new consultant surgical colleagues to support adjustment to their new role within Portsmouth Hospitals. The ultimate aim is to make sure that all new consultants within surgery have an appropriate period of mentoring tailored to their individual needs to support professional development.
Following appointment there will be a meeting between the Clinical Director/ Clinical Lead and the new Consultant to agree mentoring arrangements.

Qualifications Essential
Full GMC registration with a licence to practice Medical Degree FRCS Fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery trauma and elective Experience in shoulder and elbow surgery

Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights, Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights, An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification
