Job summary

We are recruiting for a Blood Transfusion Practitioner who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The Transfusion Practitioner (TP) team, will provide an advanced level of clinical practice, leadership and development within the specialist field of Transfusion Medicine across the Trust wherever it is required and at various trust meetings.

This will also involve training and education of staff within the Trust and the community served in best practice associated with the transfusion of blood components and products.

Main duties of the job

A primary function of the role will be to influence senior clinical staff in adopting best practice which will enable the Trust to fulfil the requirements of The National Blood Authority (NBA) evidence-based Patient Blood Management (PBM) Guidelines, the NPSA Safer Practice Notice 14 (2006), "Right Patient, Right Blood" and NICE Guidelines NG24 & QS138

The TP team will be responsible for auditing the transfusion policies and procedures in place and assist with the review of policies and guidelines.

The TP team will work closely with the Lead Biomedical Scientist in charge of the Blood Transfusion Laboratories to provide a safe, effective and efficient transfusion service, and minimise wastage and misuse of a limited and costly resource and promote the safe and effective use of blood products.

To collect relevant data and maintain relevant databases.

To act as a positive role model to junior staff members. Particular emphasis is put on the need to ensure that all staff recognizes their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner and to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training Essential

First level registration with NMC or HCPC or other appropriate professional body Educated to degree level/recent CPD at this level or equivalent experience to this level

Desirable

Evidence of CPD at masters level or equivalent experience to this level Recognised leadership course

Previous Experience & Knowledge Essential

Significant period of post registration experience in acute clinical or laboratory setting Experience of teaching, training and staff assessment Knowledge of investigation and management of clinical incidents Knowledge of clinical risk management

Desirable

Up to date experience of Haematology, blood transfusion & Laboratory practices Transfusion practitioner experience Familiarity with pathology computer systems Knowledge and understanding of audit processes

Skills Essential

Excellent presentation and teaching skills Excellent written and verbal communication Ability to facilitate and manage change Team Working

Desirable

Good keyboard/pc skills and ability to us Word, Excel and PowerPoint Ability to challenge poor practice Accuracy and attention to detail
