Job summary

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is recruiting Maintenance Assistants (Band 3) and Maintenance Trainees (Band 2) to join our Estates teams across several Health Board sites. These hands-on roles help ensure our buildings, equipment and environments remain safe, compliant and welcoming for patients, visitors and staff.

Band 3 posts require multi-trade experience and involve completing planned and reactive maintenance, statutory checks and minor repairs. Band 2 posts focus on developing maintenance skills with training and supervision across a range of routine tasks.

Flexible working may be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job

Maintenance Assistant - Band 3

As a Band 3 Maintenance Assistant, you will undertake a wide range of maintenance work across mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building fabric areas. You will:

Complete reactive and planned maintenance Undertake statutory compliance tasks (e.g., water testing, boiler checks, safety systems) Diagnose faults and carry out minor repairs Use electronic systems to manage and update work orders Support apprentices and junior staff Work independently across multiple sites Participate in on-call rotas where required This role suits someone with proven multi-trade experience who can work flexibly, respond to urgent requests and maintain high safety standards.

Maintenance Trainee - Band 2

As a Band 2 Maintenance Trainee, you will support routine maintenance activities while receiving on-the-job training across electrical, mechanical and building services. You will:

Assist with routine checks, basic repairs and planned maintenance Learn to use tools, equipment and workshop machinery safely Help maintain building fabric, external areas and access routes Support drainage, snow/ice clearing and site safety tasks Record maintenance activity using electronic systems Respond to emergency situations under supervision Travel between sites once trained (with appropriate licence) This role is ideal for someone beginning or developing a maintenance career who is enthusiastic, practical and eager to learn.

Person Specification

Band 3 Essential

Experience in multi trade or maintenance work Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience Understanding of building, electrical or mechanical maintenance procedures Ability to prioritise and work independently Good communication and teamwork skills

Band 2 Essential

Basic knowledge of maintenance tasks Understanding of safe use of tools and equipment Willingness to undertake training and develop new skills Methodical, motivated and reliable approach

For Both Roles Essential

Ability to travel across Health Board sites Good communication and interpersonal skills Flexibility to support service needs, including out of hours work Commitment to safe working practices Welsh language skills desirable at all levels2
