Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Medical Engineering Technician to join the friendly and supportive Medical Engineering Team at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, where a recently opened a new, state-of-the-art acute hospital operating across three sites.The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary medical engineering team and be expected to work independently, without direct supervision, on a range of complex medical equipment. The role includes responsibility for highly complex systems such as patient monitoring units, diagnostic ultrasounds, anaesthetic machines, life-support ventilators, medical lasers, infusion devices, baby incubators, defibrillators, and decontamination equipment. Much of this equipment will be used directly on patients. The role is largely non-routine, requiring the ability to prioritise workloads effectively and respond promptly to emergency requests.The successful candidate will hold a degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent acceptable engineering-based qualification, supported by relevant practical experience within an healthcare setting. Excellent IT skills are essential, including knowledge of medical device integration. A knowledge of decontamination processes would be a distinct advantage. The post holder will be managerially and technically accountable to the Technical Supervisor, and professionally responsible to the Deputy Head of Medical Engineering and the Head of Medical Engineering.

Main duties of the job

To carry out acceptance testing, including functional testing, quality assurance checks, electrical safety testing, planned preventative maintenance, calibration, repairs, and fault investigation on a wide range of complex medical equipment used in patient care.

To work on medical equipment requiring highly developed technical skills, specialist expertise, and precise control of tools and small components. The role involves the use of expensive and specialised test equipment. Work will be undertaken across a range of clinical environments, including wards, Accident and Emergency, Operating Theatres, Endoscopy/Decontamination Unit, Critical Care Services, Coronary Care Units, Delivery Suite, and the Neonatal Units. The post holder will be required to lift and manoeuvre heavy equipment between clinical areas, customer sites, and Medical Engineering workshops across three sites, on a rota basis.

To plan, organise, and prioritise maintenance activities related to their duties, including responding to emergency breakdown requests. The post holder must be able to work logically and analytically under pressure, taking appropriate action where and when required. Maintenance tasks may involve working with hazardous voltages, anaesthetic agents, and high-pressure medical gases.

To participate in the department's emergency on-call rota, providing the Trust with continuous technical cover, including specialist advice on the clinical application of medical devices

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Substantial experience in maintenance, fault finding and repair of electrical and electronic or mechanical and electromechanical Medical Equipment. This will have been gained in a role without direct supervision Experience in the use of computerised equipment management systems Experience in the use of electronic Test & Measurement equipment. Demonstrate practical experience in the use of machine tools in light engineering applications Experience in set up, configuration and use of IT to support troubleshooting and service of medical equipment.

Desirable

Experience gained within a medical environment (Hospital or Equipment Manufacturer) relevant practical experience preferably within an healthcare setting

Qualifications Essential

Recognised degree in electrical/electronic or mechanical engineering or equivalent acceptable engineering based qualification with relevant experience. Demonstrate ongoing training (CPD) to ensure that relevant theoretical knowledge & practice has been continually updated

Knowledge Essential

Relevant knowledge of Medical Device Integration

Desirable

Relevant knowledge of decontamination processes
