Job summary

Key Purpose

This role supports the Pharmacy Manager in the leadership and management of all Pharmacy Services, acting as Responsible Pharmacist when required.

Key Accountabilities

The postholder will ensure the safe, efficient delivery of outpatient pharmacy services in line with national and local standards, providing visible leadership and acting as a positive role model. They will fulfil statutory responsibilities as required by the GPhC and Department of Health, contributing to a high-quality, patient-centred outpatient service.

The postholder will build effective relationships with prescribers, support the development of additional clinical services, and contribute to the profitability and efficient administration of the business. Working collaboratively with the Superintendent Pharmacist, Pharmacy Manager, and fellow pharmacists is essential, as is minimising reliance on locum cover. They will work closely with specialist clinical pharmacists and service leads to deliver high standards of medicines management, benefiting patients, carers, and clinical staff alike.

Main duties of the job

Duties & Responsibilities

Staff Management & Development The postholder will provide clinical and professional leadership, contributing to staff recruitment, induction, appraisals, and performance management. They will ensure all staff meet GPhC standards and handle disciplinary matters professionally in the Manager's absence.

Operational Management The postholder will ensure compliance with GPhC requirements and the Responsible Pharmacist Regulations 2008, overseeing efficient delivery of outpatient services, KPIs, medicines storage, and safe disposal processes.

Controlled Drugs & Medicines Management They will ensure legally compliant management of controlled drugs, support formulary adherence, and collaborate with prescribers to promote cost-effective, patient-centred medicines optimisation.

Financial Management The postholder holds delegated responsibility for medicines procurement and stock management, contributing to profitability and compliance with financial and cash-handling procedures.

Communication, Confidentiality & Equality They will maintain high communication standards, uphold data protection and confidentiality, and champion equality and diversity across the team.

Quality, Safety & Governance The postholder will contribute to audits, health and safety, risk management, and patient safety alert implementation.

Professional Development They will maintain CPD in line with GPhC requirements and actively support their own and their team's ongoing development.

Shift Pattern:

Qualifications:Candidates must hold current registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Applicants should have broad experience across a variety of pharmacy settings and roles, including involvement in temporary or day-to-day management responsibilities. Experience contributing to or leading the development of a new business, organisation, or team is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, with the ability to organise and prioritise their own workload, translate ideas into practice, and demonstrate a pragmatic, methodical, and resilient approach to their work.
