Main duties of the job
Evelina London Children's Hospital (ELCH) opened on 31st October 2005. It was constructed using charitable funding on the STH site and is accessed via link corridors from the St Thomas' Hospital building. It is now one of the UK's leading paediatric teaching hospitals. Our vision is to be a world leading centre of life-changing care for children, young people and their families. In 2016 Evelina London Children's Hospital achieved an 'Outstanding' rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We treat 120,000 chidren every year.
The Paediatric Anaesthetic Group provides ~11000 anaesthetics a year. Just less than half are under the age of five and over 200 are neonates. From April 2022, all children's cardiac, respiratory, and intensive care services provided on the Evelina London Children's Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital sites came together as a single clinical directorate (CRIC) within the Evelina London Clinical Group. Other paediatric surgical services include general surgery, ENT (including specialist airway surgery), cleft and plastic surgery, nephro-urology (including renal transplantation), orthopaedic/spinal, ophthalmic and dental surgery. The Anaesthetic Services include a Pre-Assessment Clinic and an Acute Pain Service.

The Department of Anaesthesia is seeking a full-time (10 PA) Substantive Consultant with a special interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and is looking for an individual with the appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence. The team is also looking to expand in the near future. Evelina London Children's Hospital has recently opened a new stand-alone Children's Day Surgery Centre adjacent to the original hospital.
Job description Job responsibilities
We are looking for candidates trained in Paediatric Anaesthesia who are of the right calibre to add additional valuable contribution to our team. We encourage applications from those with interests in quality improvement, theatre productivity, IT, management, research and teaching. Additionally experience in paediatric acute pain management will be advantageous.
The department has a special interest in teaching & training, regional anaesthesia, patient optimisation & difficult airway skills. We have an active role in the Trusts high fidelity simulation centre. Our anaesthetic sites are equipped with Drger Primus or Fabius (MRI) anaesthetic machines, Phillips monitors & GE and Sonosite ultrasound for nerve blocks. There is close liaison with the PICU.
All new employment contracts include elective weekend working.

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications Essential
Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise. On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT.
Desirable
Higher Qualification recognised by the University of London. Academic distinction or Prizes.
Clinical Experience Essential
Comprehensive training and clinical experience in anaesthesia equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Anaesthesia. At least 1 year of comprehensive training and clinical experience in Paediatric and Neonatal Anaesthesia
Desirable
Post CCT experience Overseas experience in an international centre of excellence Evidence of CPD in relevant sub-specialist areas e.g. pre-operative assessment Experience in anaesthesia for non-cardiac surgery on children with co-incidental congenital cardiac disease
Clinical Skills Essential
Evidence of APLS or equivalent in the past 3 years Ability to organise and independently manage the safe conduct of operating lists. Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.
Audit Management & IT Essential
Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management. Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management.
Desirable

Research. Teaching skill & experience Essential
Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research. Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff. Presenting and teaching preferably beyond immediate place of work
