Job summary
We welcome applications from registrars from a range of backgrounds with a range of experience and can discuss individual training needs, for potential start dates in September 2026 and February/March 2027. Applicants should have completed a minimum of two years of training at the equivalent of specialist registrar level in a parent speciality and have experience in a critical carELCH PICU is the lead centre PICU for South Thames and home base for the integrated paediatric emergency transport service-South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS). PICU is a mixed intake unit, admitting cardiac and general intensive care. Over 1200 children are admitted per annum through 30 physical beds. 10 beds are predominantly for level 2 care. Approximately 35% of admissions are cardiac or cardiac surgical admissions. 50% admissions are as emergencies through STRS. STRS takes over 1750 calls per annum and transfers about 950 children. The paediatric critical care airway service and Evelina ECMO service (respiratory and cardiac) are also based within the PICU.
The unit is accredited to undertake both Year 1 and Year 2 PICM training.
The post will be based at the Evelina Children's Hospital. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Job description Job responsibilities
Clinical:
To manage PICU patients under the supervision of the Chief PICU Fellow and Consultant on Duty. To take part in a full-shift rota which will include being resident when on the night shift. To undertake teaching and guideline development within the fixed rota. To participate in the Paediatric Retrieval rota, initially in a Supernumerary role, the length of which will depend on previous Retrieval experience. To have the opportunity to gain airway and access skills experience in theatres. To participate in the training of the Retrieval Nurse Practitioners. To undertake a P.A.L.S or A.P.L.S Course if have not already done so.
Training of junior staff:
The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Qualifications Essential
MB BS or equivalent. MRCP, FRCA or equivalent.
Desirable
Additional e.g. BSc. Courses: APLS, or PALS.
Experience Essential
Proven record of experience and training in parent speciality. At least 6 months experience in critical care (tertiary NICU, PICU or adult ICU) or anaesthesia.

Previous experience in Cardiac or Paediatric Intensive Care.

Level of MRCP, FRCA or equivalent. Able to perform CPR, intubation, central and arterial lines, intercostal drainage and lumbar puncture. Able to make good medical notes.
