Job summary

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly team at the Old School Surgery and UWE Health Centre.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for supporting and undertaking a variety of clinical and administrative duties in a busy GP surgery. This role is part time for 20-30 hours per week.

We have a branch surgery at the University of the West of England housed in the middle of this vibrant University. Excellent, enthusiastic and competent nursing and support teams.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical duties:

Undertake phlebotomy - venepuncture.

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory.

Measuring and recording:

blood pressure

pulse rate and rhythm

temperature

height and weight

body mass index

Perform ECGs and record results accurately.

Blood glucose monitoring.

Support long-term condition management by performing routine checks - e.g. diabetes foot checks.

Further training to enhanced skills is available but we are ideally looking for a candidate with existing experience in these key areas.

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence.

Support clinicians in providing minor surgery.

Ability to undertake patient observations and recognise what is normal, reporting back to appropriate health care professional.

Provide and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all patients and carers.

Participate in a team approach to patient care in conjunction with the Primary Health Care Team, medical staff and professionals allied to medicine.

Contribute to the legibility and accuracy of the patients/clients care plan/records and/or other reports. Contribute to the effectiveness of the established communication/ reporting system.

Participate in regular team meetings and attend other meetings as and when required.

The role may require you to work at both The Old School Surgery site, and the branch surgery site on the UWE University campus.

Undertake extended professional development.

Follow and implement care plans as devised by registered staff in a variety of settings.

To ensure that you and others function in the surgery's clinical governance framework, including risk management.

Organisational/administrative duties:

To work as an effective member of the practice team and support the registered nurse in the delivery of patient care.

Monitoring and ordering supplies and maintaining stock levels as delegated in coordination with Lead Nurses.

Able to deal with unexpected situations relating to treatment room in an appropriate manner and refer on to an appropriate person.

Take the initiative in providing support to the registered staff and other practice team members to enable them to extend their roles.

To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records and data on treatment room activities.

Undertake, record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training.

Education and research duties:

Participate in training programmes and personal development appropriate to the post.

Participate and contribute to providing a learning environment for students and any other staff.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and personal characteristics Essential

* Caring and compassionate. * Motivated. * Able to follow instructions and procedures. * Able to work in a team but use their own initiative. * Excellent communication skills, including listening. * Good organisational skills. * Basic IT Skills

Desirable

* Previous experience working with EMIS.

Experience Essential

* Experience of venepuncture

Desirable

* Previous experience working as an HCA in a primary healthcare setting. * Experienced and competent in performing ECGs, observations such as blood pressure, and patient health checks such as diabetic foot checks.

Qualifications Essential

* Qualified phlebotomist with recent experience * Good standard of English and Maths

Desirable

* Care Certificate * NVQ 2/3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
