Job summary

Join University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in our dynamic Respiratory Support Team and play a vital role in transforming care for patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) across our region.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a highly specialised regional service, supporting adults living with PCD as part of our expert multidisciplinary team. You'll deliver nurse-led clinics, guide patients from diagnosis through ongoing care, and provide expert advice while working both independently and collaboratively.

As a key point of contact for patients, you'll offer education, reassurance, and continuity of care, while also contributing to research, service development, audit, and quality improvement. You'll also support patients transitioning into adult services, ensuring seamless, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

*Act as an expert clinical practitioner and key point of contact for patients with PCD

*Deliver and lead nurse-led clinics, demonstrating advanced clinical decision-making

*Provide specialist advice, education, and support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals

*Coordinate care across the patient pathway, including transition into adult services

*Work autonomously while contributing to multidisciplinary team decision-making

*Lead and contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives

*Support and participate in research activity within the specialist service

*Provide leadership, supervision, and support to junior staff where appropriate

Person specification (key requirements)

*Registered Nurse with current NMC registration

*Significant post-registration experience, including respiratory care

*Evidence of specialist knowledge in respiratory conditions (Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchiectasis or PCD experience desirable)

*Experience of working at Band 6 level or equivalent

*Demonstrable experience of autonomous practice and clinical decision-making

*Experience of service development, audit, or quality improvement

*Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)

*Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills

Qualifications Essential

*Registered Adult Nurse with valid NMC registration *Evidence of post registration CPD / post registration qualification in the appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience *Recognised mentorship course

Desirable

*To have or working towards a MSc/ Masters qualification *To have or working towards advanced health assessment module -- where applicable to the role *Non -- Medical Prescriber/ willingness to undertake - where applicable to the role *Membership of relevant special interest groups. (eg ARNs / BTS)

Experience Essential

*Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC *Significant years post registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at B6 or above in defined or associated speciality Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence. *Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality. *Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting. *Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment. *Experience of patient service user advocacy role *Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff *Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality *Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding *Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance *Experience of supporting patients with a diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia, cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis. *Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice.

Desirable

*Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator *Experience in service development Awareness of current research related to the speciality *Awareness of current research related to the speciality *Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery *Knowledge and understanding of the research process. *Relevant clinic experience and understanding of respiratory diagnostics, delivering home IV therapy, delivering nebulised antibiotics and nebuliser assessment trials. *Experience assisting patients with PIP applications.

Additional Criteria Essential

*Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload *Ability to communicate with a wide range of health care professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skills. *Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level and to manage / prioritise own workload, supervise / appraise and asses junior staff *Competent in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required Ability to work under pressure across competing priorities *Ability to undertake clinical audit, analyse information and develop robust measurable action plans to support improvement / change *Evidence of ability to compile reports and documents for internal / external communication *Knowledge of current evidence-based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development *Experience of working with the multidisciplinary team across multiple patient pathways and across traditional healthcare boarders. *Ability to adapt behaviour to changing circumstances *Positive and enthusiastic attitude *Ability to communicate articulately and motivate others * Evidence of flexible and innovative approach to service delivery and development *Ability to work a varied shift pattern where required *Ability to act on own initiative *Strong sense of professional integrity, and compliance with Trust vision and values. *Be able to attend clinics within the UHB footprint, and online where needed.
