Job Title: Automation Engineer (Amazon RME)Job DescriptionThis role focuses on designing, developing, implementing, and optimizing automation control systems for industrial processes and highly automated warehouse distribution equipment. You will work with conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, SCADA devices, and related material handling equipment to improve reliability, performance, and safety. You will serve as a technical expert on automation controls, lead complex troubleshooting, and drive continuous improvement initiatives while strictly following established policies, procedures, and safety standards. Responsibilities • Serve as the on-site technical expert for automation control systems, providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced automation engineers to ensure adherence to safety and technical standards. • Design, develop, implement, and optimize control systems and software for industrial automation and material handling equipment. • Program, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC and PC-based controllers, HMI systems, and industrial control networks. • Support and optimize material handling equipment (MHE) including conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, and SCADA devices. • Adhere to strict documentation requirements and follow Automation Change Management procedures for all system modifications and upgrades. • Partner closely with operations, engineering, and support teams to deliver automation projects and improve MHE performance and reliability. • Monitor MHE metrics and KPIs, analyze performance issues, and lead troubleshooting efforts both locally on-site and remotely. • Conduct root cause analysis for equipment and system failures, implement corrective actions, and drive process improvements for performance and cost savings. • Communicate technical issues, project timelines, risks, and operational workarounds clearly to leadership and key stakeholders. • Provide remote technical support for automation systems, guiding teams through diagnostics, error resolution, and system recovery. • Interpret, modify, and develop mechanical and electrical drawings to support installation, maintenance, and upgrades of automation systems. • Use CMMS tools to plan, coordinate, and document complex maintenance activities involving multiple stakeholders. • Support field service engineering and technical training activities related to conveyors, sortation, ASRS, industrial robotics, and other automation equipment. • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging data and system performance metrics to identify opportunities for optimization. • Work flexibly across varied 10-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to support a high-speed, highly automated distribution environment. Essential Skills • 4-year degree or knowledge equivalent to a 4-year degree in a relevant engineering or technical discipline. • Proven ability to lead, train, and mentor less experienced automation engineers in a fast-paced industrial environment. • Strong proficiency in using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to coordinate and document complex maintenance activities. • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills in industrial automation and equipment maintenance, including control systems and material handling equipment. • Advanced verbal and written English communication skills, with the ability to interpret and clearly communicate policies and technical information. • A strong problem-solving mindset, with adaptability and a demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement. • Flexibility and willingness to work varied 10-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. • At least 1 year of hands-on experience working with automation equipment, controls, or robotics in an industrial or distribution environment. • Ability to work comfortably in a performance-driven environment where productivity and results are measured using data and metrics. Additional Skills & Qualifications • 2+ years of experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting, including development of ladder logic and related control strategies. • Experience in HMI and control network design, as well as working with SCADA systems and performance KPIs. • Hands-on experience with motor controls such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), DC drives, and starters. • Experience working with industrial electrical systems, including 480V 3-phase, 120 VAC, and 24VDC circuits. • Proficiency in Allen-Bradley platforms and controls software such as RSLogix5000, Studio, FT View, and related automation tools. • Experience in controls design and systems integration for industrial automation and material handling systems. • Ability to interpret, modify, and develop mechanical and electrical schematics and drawings. • Field service engineering and technical training experience, particularly with conveyors, sortation systems, ASRS, and industrial robotics. • Proven track record in providing remote technical support and driving automation system improvements across multiple sites. • Experience with control technician or automation technician responsibilities, including equipment maintenance and industrial maintenance. • Familiarity with scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, and SCADA devices within an automated distribution environment. • Experience with HMI development and troubleshooting, Control View or similar visualization tools, and industrial network diagnostics. • Comfort working with high-speed automation, robotic equipment, and advanced material handling technologies. • Exposure to target automation controls or robotics and the ability to dive into errors and troubleshoot complex control issues. Work EnvironmentYou will work in a large, highly automated distribution facility equipped with high-speed material handling systems and extensive robotic components. The environment is data-driven, with performance tracked through metrics to ensure expectations are met, while avoiding unnecessary micromanagement. The role is physically active and requires comfort with walking approximately 10,000 steps per day as you move throughout the facility to support equipment and systems. All positions operate on 10-hour shifts, and you must be open to working any shift, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, to support continuous operations. You will regularly interact with advanced automation technologies, including conveyors, sortation equipment, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA devices, and industrial electrical and control systems. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Brookshire, TX. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $41.50 - $41.50/hr.
