Job Title: Cable Technician IJob DescriptionThe Cable Technician I role offers an opportunity to develop and apply foundational skills in structured cabling as a contributing member of a technical team. This position focuses on installing, routing, terminating, and supporting low-voltage cabling systems in commercial environments while learning industry standards and best practices. Responsibilities • Install work area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture (such as surface mount boxes), and wall locations using appropriate hardware and methods. • Drop cable down walls using fish tape or other approved techniques, ensuring clean, safe, and efficient cable routing. • Route cable through modular furniture and building pathways in accordance with project plans and industry standards. • Perform pre-termination procedures including organizing, forming, dressing, and labeling cables, while determining proper cable length and slack. • Suspend and support cable correctly using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, trapeze supports, and other approved support systems. • Build telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connect hardware, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and associated equipment. • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required to meet safety and performance standards. • Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls, including installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves, and properly sealing core penetrations. • Terminate low-voltage devices and cabling, including copper and fiber optic terminations, following manufacturer specifications and project requirements. • Interpret and follow construction drawings, prints, and documentation to complete installations accurately. • Accurately complete all required paperwork on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other project documentation. • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with quality standards. • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition throughout the project. Essential Skills • Minimum of 0 to 1 year of experience in the structured cabling or electrical industry. • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with a strong willingness to learn and develop new technical skills. • Basic knowledge of the construction industry and construction site practices. • Ability to install, route, and support cabling using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports. • Ability to perform pre-termination tasks such as organizing, dressing, labeling, and measuring cable length and slack. • Capability to build and outfit telecommunications closets, including mounting backboards, racks, patch panels, cross-connects, and fiber optic hardware. • Skill in terminating low-voltage devices and cabling, including copper (Cat 5, Cat 6) and fiber optic terminations. • Ability to perform fire-stopping procedures on fire walls, including installing sleeves and properly sealing cable penetrations. • Competence in reading and following prints and technical drawings. • Basic understanding of cable types such as Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cabling. • Construction and cabling experience, including cable pulling and termination work. • Commitment to completing paperwork accurately and on time for all assigned tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience pulling and terminating fiber optic cable is highly beneficial. • OSHA 10 certification or training is preferred and supports safe work practices on construction sites. • Prior exposure to low-voltage, electrical, or cabling work in commercial environments is an advantage. • Strong attention to detail in labeling, organizing, and documenting cabling installations. • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and work on multiple sites within the region. • Good communication skills for collaborating with team members and following instructions from supervisors. Work EnvironmentThis position is based primarily at a work site in Manassas, Virginia, with the expectation of flexibility to support other projects within the Northern Virginia area as needed. The role involves working on active construction sites and commercial facilities, installing and supporting structured cabling systems. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, typically from early morning (around 5:00 AM) to mid-afternoon, with extended hours possible up to early evening and occasional Saturday work as project demands require. The environment includes the use of ladders, hand tools, power tools, cable trays, J-hooks, racks, patch panels, fiber optic equipment, and other cabling infrastructure. Technicians should expect a physically active role that may involve standing, bending, climbing, and working in various indoor construction and telecom spaces, following site safety practices and appropriate attire for a construction and technical installation setting. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chantilly, VA. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
