Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, highly motivated individual to the role of Phlebotomist. You will be joining a well-established team in a well-established practice. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Phlebotomist and ideally have worked in Primary Care before.
Main duties of the job
Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently for adult and paediatric patients, demonstrating competence across all age groupsPrepare patients for blood collection, ensuring comfort, dignity, and consentCorrectly label, handle, and process specimens in line with practice and laboratory protocolsMaintain accurate and timely patient records on the clinical systemMonitor and restock clinical supplies, ensuring equipment is clean and fit for useAdhere to infection prevention and control procedures at all timesIdentify and respond appropriately to adverse reactions (e.g. fainting)Liaise with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure smooth clinic flowSupport chronic disease monitoring programmes (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation)Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, including sharps managementMaintain patient confidentiality and data protection standardsProvide a professional, courteous, and reassuring service to patientsParticipate in mandatory training and ongoing professional development
About us
We are a large forward-thinking practice with more than 17,000 patients, based in a purpose built building the centre of Chorley. We have regular practice meetings, with a structured meeting rota including whole staff meetings, clinical meetings, safeguarding meeting and protected time for training. We have a multidisciplinary, clinical team made up of 6 GP Partners, 5 Salaried GPs and 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, who are supported by a wider team of Paramedics, Pharmacists, First Contact Physios, a range of specialised Nurses and Health Care Assistants. We are a training practice and have a number of junior doctors working at site, including FY2s, ST2s and ST3s. The practice benefits from a well-structured management team which is led by a Practice Business Manager. Person Specification
Experience Essential
Previous experience as a Phlebotomist in a GP practice, hospital, or community setting Demonstrable competence in venepuncture for both adult and paediatric patients Relevant training/qualification in phlebotomy Good understanding of specimen collection, labelling, and handling procedures Knowledge of infection prevention and control and safe sharps management Experience using clinical IT systems and maintaining accurate patient records Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a calm and reassuring manner Ability to work independently, manage workload, and maintain clinic flow High level of accuracy and attention to detail Professional, reliable, and flexible approach to work Understanding of confidentiality, data protection, and safeguarding requirements Commitment to high standards of patient care and continuous professional development
Desirable
Experience working in a GP practice or primary care setting Experience using EMIS Web Experience supporting chronic disease monitoring (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation) Competence in additional clinical skills (e.g. BP monitoring, ECGs, health checks) Experience working with diverse patient groups, including those with complex needs Knowledge of NHS systems, pathways, and quality frameworks Experience in stock control and clinical room management Basic life support (BLS) certification Experience contributing to service improvement or audit activities
