About this role

Job summary

Applications are invited for asubstantivepost in Intensive Care Medicine at one of Europe's leading hospital sites at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. Applicants who wish to undertake partner specialty work in anaesthesia and/or critical care transfer medicine will be welcome.Other parter specialty work may also be possible pending discussion.

This postwill be based in the purpose built 46 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Southmead Hospital, NBT. The successfulapplicantwill join a team of27 Critical CareConsultantsandaround 50 ICM resident doctors

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic individual whopossess the drive and desire to contribute to our expanding service. This is an exciting period for the Unit as it will shortly be releasing it's new Five Year Clinical Strategy which will align with the Group Clinical Strategy and we will be working more closely together with the other critical care units across Bristol as part of the new hospital group formation.

Interview date is planned for 4th August 2026.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. If partner specialty work is to be undertaken then applicants will be required to be on the Specialist Register for that partner specialty. Full Registration with the GMC is essential.

CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of the interview.

Main duties of the job

The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside no more than 30 minutes travelling time (by road) from the Southmead Hospital site for on-call purposes. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.

The 46 bed Southmead Critical Care Unit is one of the busiest ICUs in the country, with a team of over 300 staff treating more than 2500 critically ill patients each year. Within the team we currently have 27 Consultant Intensivists and more than 40 Postgraduate Doctors in Training. Southmead Critical Care Unit is the regional specialist critical care centre for neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology and stroke thrombectomy, neurology, renal medicine, trauma and orthopaedics (including revision joint replacement, complex spinal and pelvic surgery) and urology. It delivers some of the highest intensive care and major trauma survival rates in the country.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

FFICM or equivalent Full and unrestricted registration with GMC CCT in Intensive Care Medicine and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment (specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date

Desirable

Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

Training and Experience Essential

Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent) Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential Training in diagnosis and treatment of Conditions and subspecialties relevant to NBT patient mix

Desirable

Evidence of extensive experience in sub-specialties reflected in the job description Expertise acquired during training that would augment existing and / or add novel expertise to the delivery of quality Critical Care at NBT

Further Training, Management, Audit Essential

Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues Knowledge of political context within which we operate Experience in audit project and written up

Desirable

Completion of a general management course or programme Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.

Research, Teaching, Publications Essential

Proven teaching ability Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates
