About this role

Job summary

To deliver an efficient and effective nutrition and dietetic service to the Acute Stroke Unit, older adults, and their carers. To support junior staff to develop clinical skills to manage the complex needs of the older adult. Tol be an educator for health professionals/students involved in the care of stroke patients and older adults. Management of own complex clinical caseload providing specialist nutrition and dietetic advice in specialty fields to include Stroke and Care of the Elderly. Facilitate reflection on the service delivery and identify and support on quality improvement work. To support the nutrition nurse specialist with the Trust's artificial nutrition safety and quality initiatives To provide one day per week in the community including 3 GP clinics and 15 hours per month at a local nursing home.

Main duties of the job

As a specialist dietitian, to be responsible for and lead the development and provision of a specialist, evidence based dietetic service to care of the elderly and stroke services. To provide specialist dietary advice to stroke patients and older patients with complex nutritional needs, referred in the acute setting. To work autonomously in providing an expert dietetic service to the acute stroke unit, including attending special interest meetings. To work collaboratively with colleagues such as speech & language therapists in joint assessments of patients with complicated diagnoses. To be the lead for service improvements on the acute troke unit and care of the elderly service lines. To provide highly specialist dietetic advice to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) through attendance and participation in MDT meetings to provide expert evidence-based advice to clinicians, patients and carers. To advise the MDT on treatment/interventions where there are conflicting indicators or ethical dilemmas. To provide general GP clinics and input for a local nursing home one day per week.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications Essential

BSc in Nutrition & Dietetics or BSc in relevant Science plus post graduate diploma in Dietetics HCPC Registered Dietitian

Desirable

Relevant MSc or post registration qualification

Experience Essential

Extensive and relevant experience in general dietetics post qualification Previous experience of working in the NHS Substantial experience of managing an acute caseload, including complex enteral nutrition Experience of running outpatient clinics

Knowledge Essential

Good clinical knowledge of general dietetics An in depth understanding of all aspects of enteral nutrition, including ethical decision making and end of life and eating and drinking with associated risk decisions Knowledge of current recognised clinical and good practice guidance for older people and stroke patients

Desirable

Principles and practice of Audit, Clinical Governance, standards, and care pathways
