About this role

Job summary This is an exciting opportunity to join the dedicated and dynamic team in Bexley Wing Theatres at St. Jamess University Hospital.

Our Bexley Wing Theatre department is well established and consists of four operating theatres delivering high-quality, specialised care for patients undergoing Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Gynae Oncology Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. We also carry out innovative Robotic Surgery in each of these specialities.

The Bexley Wing Theatre Department predominantly carries out major elective surgery and is required to run a service for six out of seven days (Saturday working is expected). Our working hours are 08:00-18:00 but there is an expectation to be flexible around start and finish times due to the nature of the surgery that we carry out.

The successful candidate must be a Registered Practitioner (Nurse Registered or Operating Department Practitioner Registered). Previous operating theatre experience is desired but not essential. There will be an expectation for the successful candidate to work in all specialities (Upper GI, Gynae Oncology, Thoracic and Robotic) in a scrub capacity, anaesthetic capacity or both. The candidate may also be required to occasionally work in other specialities to meet service demand. This will give them the opportunity to expand on their current skills and experience.

Main duties of the job To provide and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the Peri-operative patient. To carry out all relevant forms of care competently without direct supervision.

Communicate with members of the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate continuity of care and promote effective team working.

To assist with the teaching and supervision of learners and other staff.

The jobholder will work within an environment caring for peri-operative patients.

Qualifications - Essential Criteria

Registered Nurse Or Registered Operating Department Practitioner

Willing to undergo further training as necessary

Qualifications - Desirable

Supporting Learning in Practice Mentor.

Experience - Essential criteria

Current issues in health care

Understanding of the principles of patient centred care.

Experience - Desirable

Previous experience in operating theatres.

Awareness of the specialities.

Skills & behaviours - Essential

Organisational skills

Time management skills

Team player

Understanding of research-based practice - research conscious

Communication skills

Ability to act

professionally at all times

Skills & Behaviours - desirable

Capable of lateral thinking.
