About this role

Job summary

We welcome applications for the role of Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team based at Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset. This is an excellent opportunity for you to bring forward fresh ideas, drive service improvement and introduce new initiatives.

We have a newly opened diagnostic centre featuring state of the art equipment, modern facilities and providing an excellent working environment. We are a JAG accredited service demonstrating a commitment to high standards and quality patient care.

The role attracts a 10 PA per week job plan and includes participation in the GI bleed on-call rota (approximately one weekday every two weeks and one weekend every eight weeks).

Within this job plan you will provide specialist diagnosis and management of gastroenterology, hepatology and general medical patients at YDH. You will maintain responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care, respond to referrals from primary care and other specialties, and offer expert gastroenterology input across the Trust. The role includes caring for acute and elective gastroenterology patients, supporting the development of nurse led endoscopy services, and managing a wide range of conditions in outpatient clinics.

You will ensure clinical practice meets governance standards, engage in annual appraisal and revalidation, maintain effective communication with colleagues and external partners, and support service development with awareness of NHS budgeting considerations.

Main duties of the job

Diagnosis and management of patients with Gastroenterological and general medical conditions.Continuing responsibility for care of patients in liaison with consultant colleagues.Respond to and manage in- and outpatient referrals from primary care and other specialties.Professional supervision, management and training of junior medical staff.To be aware of the general and local budgeting issues within the NHS.To be fully involved in the development of the specialty.To ensure clinical practice is monitored and performed in accordance with requirements from clinical governance.Participate in annual Appraisal and revalidation as recommended by the Royal College of Physicians and General Medical Council.Participate in Pathology and Multidisciplinary Team Meetings.Care of patients in gastroenterology/hepatology (and a few general medicine) admitted via acute take as well as electively.Provide specialist gastroenterology opinion on in-patient from other specialties.Develop and support nurse endoscopy services.See and treat patients with a wide spectrum of gastroenterology conditions in outpatient setting.Promote and take part in teaching and training of nursing staff and medical students.Maintain effective and timely communication with colleagues in the Trust, primary care and other centres as necessary.To take part in GI bleed on call rota of approximately 1 weekday every 2 weeks and 1 weekend every 8 weeks.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MBBS and MRCP or equivalent. Full GMC application with a licence to practice. Entry on the GMC specialist register via:CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date),CESR orEuropean Community Rights.

Desirable

An appropriate higher degree or qualification (MD, PhD or equivalent).

Experience Essential

Depth and breadth of clinical experience in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, General Medicine and Acute Medicine. Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department.

Desirable

Experience at locum consultant level.

Additional Criteria Essential

Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description. Ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant. Ability to lead and develop the service. Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi-professional and team basis with all levels. Ability to communicate effectively. Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies. Knowledge of the NHS plan/modernisation agenda and the implications for service. Able to establish good working relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Flexible and adaptable to competing demands. Commitment to modern practices. Driving licence or ability to travel between sites.

Desirable

Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit principles and evidence of direct involvement in 2 specific audits in the last 18 months. Knowledge of principles of research and evidence of involvement in a research project in the last 2 years. Evidence of general management training and self-development in areas such as recruitment and selection, equal opportunities, leadership, planning and change management, appraisal. Evidence of ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust. Evidence of teaching appropriate to Medical students and Doctors in training and the multidisciplinary team Ability to present effectively to an audience using a variety of methods. Commitment to a career in hospital medicine. Able to organise own learning.
