Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for Clinical Coding Specialists to join our friendly, highly skilled and supportive Clinical Coding team. Whether you're already an experienced coder or looking to develop specialist expertise in this unique profession, you'll be joining a service that plays a vital role in delivering high-quality healthcare.
Clinical Coders translate information from patient records--including diagnoses, treatments and procedures--into nationally recognised clinical codes.
These codes do far more than record activity. They provide the data that helps improve patient safety, supports clinical research, informs service planning and ensures healthcare is accurately represented across the NHS.
Main duties of the job
Accurate clinical coding is also fundamental to the Trust's financial sustainability, supporting service recovery and investment in frontline care.
As a Clinical Coding Specialist, you'll work on a wide range of complex and specialist patient records, analysing detailed clinical information and applying national coding standards to produce accurate, high-quality data.
This is a role where your expertise directly contributes to better healthcare. The quality of your work influences national datasets, supports operational and strategic decision-making and helps the Trust continue its journey of recovery and transformation.
In this role you will:
Analyse complex clinical records, assign accurate diagnostic & procedural codes using national standards. Apply national clinical coding classifications, standards & guidance to ensure high-quality coded data. Work collaboratively with clinicians to clarify documentation & resolve complex coding queries. Contribute to clinical coding audits & quality improvement initiatives. Support colleagues by sharing knowledge, mentoring less experienced coders and promoting best practice. Help ensure the Trust's clinical activity is accurately reflected, supporting operational planning, service development & financial recovery. If you have not yet achieved the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ), we'll provide structured training, protected learning time and ongoing support to help you successfully complete the qualification.

Experience Desirable
Previous experience within the NHS or an acute hospital setting
Skills Essential
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, have the ability to communicate at all levels. Ability to prioritise and work under pressure Able to relate to staff at all levels in an organisation and to build strong working relationships. Able to manage regular workload Work flexibly to meet varying deadlines and targets.

Excellent attention to detail and keyboard skills
Knowledge Essential
Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
Desirable
A thorough understanding of the clinical coding classifications currently in use (ICD10 and OPCS4). Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms. Understanding of importance of Data Quality in Clinical Coding.
Qualifications Essential
Educated to GSCE level or equivalent, including Maths and English.
Desirable
Willingness to work towards National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) Completed Clinical Coding Standards Course (Band 4 only)
