Job summary The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor provides specialist advice, training, and support to managers, staff, and students across the Health Board to reduce manual handling and musculoskeletal risks and promote safe working practices. The post holder plays a key role in improving staff health, safety, wellbeing, and service efficiency through the application of manual handling and ergonomics principles in both clinical and non-clinical environments. They support compliance with health and safety legislation, the Core Skills for Health Framework, and the All-Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme through training delivery, risk assessment, incident investigation, auditing, and expert guidance.
Main duties of the job
Plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate manual handling and ergonomics training programmes across the Health Board. Produce training materials, presentations, lesson plans, and assessment resources. Ensure training records are maintained and mandatory training requirements are achieved. Provide expert advice on manual handling, people handling, ergonomics, and Display Screen Equipment (DSE). Undertake complex ergonomic and manual handling risk assessments for staff and patients. Advise on the selection and safe use of equipment and recommend workplace adaptations. Support managers with safe systems of work and compliance with legislation and Health Board policies. Investigate manual handling and ergonomic incidents, identifying root causes and recommending preventative actions. Analyse incident, accident, sickness absence, and audit data to identify trends and risks. Conduct manual handling and ergonomics audits across clinical and non-clinical settings. Produce audit reports and support managers in implementing action plans. Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of manual handling policies and procedures. Supervise and provide line management support to Manual Handling Trainers .

Qualifications /knowledge Essential
Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent, and/or equivalent extensive relevant experience Post Graduate Diploma in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PcET) or equivalent Have or be working towards accredited and bespoke manual handling courses specific to healthcare and patient handling, or be willing to undertake. Good level of IT skills including Word, Power-point Spreadsheet, Publisher and Databases Extensive experience of working in a healthcare environment. Excellent presentation, verbal, written and demonstration skills. Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and the risk assessment process and their application to manual and patient handling in the workplace. Knowledge of the Health Board's Manual Handling Policy and procedures, and any other relevant policies and procedures e.g. sickness / absence policy, incident reporting policy etc.
Desirable
Qualified / registered healthcare professional e.g. nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, radiographer, ergonomist etc. Recognised Teaching or training qualification e.g. FETC, PGCE. Patient handling trainers course which meets the requirements of the National Back Exchange inter-professional framework and standards for training. Relevant health & safety course e.g. IOSH or NEBOSH European Computer Driving Licence or similar qualification. Recognised Ergonomics Qualification/Training

Proficient at maintaining records and statistical information and converting information into required format for reports. Motivated, enthusiastic person with a practical problem -solving approach, capable of working as part of a team. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well with ward and department managers and their teams. Ability to work under pressure and balance competing priorities. Proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office and Presentation technologies. Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to write reports. Able to apply creative thought to problem solving, including seeking low cost solutions where possible. Shows empathy and compassion towards others - a natural disposition to put yourself in someone else's shoes. Sees and treats others as individuals (patient, families, and colleagues) and treats people with dignity and respect. Shows resilience, adaptability and flexible approach as situations arise and positivity when times are tough.
