About this role
At David Nice Builders, we craft construction masterpieces through integrity, enduring relationships, and passionate people. Join our growing team and keep our civil construction operations moving every day.
Position Overview
We're hiring a Heavy Equipment Transport Driver to move construction equipment and materials to our civil jobsites across the region. This means operating a lowboy hauling bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy iron, not a freight run or a shipping container. This is a construction operation role, and you will be working as part of an active field crew.
When the hauling is done, you are on site. You contribute to the crew, support labor tasks, and operate equipment as directed. If you take pride in moving heavy iron safely, keep your rig and your record clean, and carry yourself like a professional on and off the road, this is a great fit.
What You'll Do
• Safely operate a range of CDL-class vehicles including single, double, and quad axle trucks, lowboy, and tractor trailer configurations hauling heavy construction equipment.
• Transport bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy equipment to and from jobsites, ensuring proper loading, securing, signage, and safety compliance throughout.
• Haul materials including stone and soil to active construction sites as directed.
• Perform daily vehicle and equipment maintenance including fueling, greasing, cleaning, and pre-trip inspections.
• Complete hauling reports and turn in all hauling tickets daily.
• Communicate clearly with the site Superintendent throughout the day and maintain required logs and documentation.
• Operate off-road trucks, forklifts, loaders, and rollers on site as needed, controlling attachments including blades, buckets, scrapers, and booms.
• When not actively hauling, support site labor crews with hand work and general site duties as directed.
• Keep vehicles, equipment, and work areas clean and professionally maintained at all times.
What We're Looking For
• Current Class A CDL license with a clean driving record. An annual VDOT physical is required.
• Demonstrated experience hauling heavy construction equipment on a lowboy or similar configuration.
• Minimum one year of experience in the construction industry preferred.
• Solid knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and site-specific safety regulations. You follow the rules and do not need reminders.
• Good communication skills, daily coordination with the Superintendent and crew.
• Comfort operating Android or iPhone devices and two-way radios.
• Dependability. You show up on time, complete your assignments, and follow through without supervision.
Certifications Required
• Current Class A CDL License.
• Current CPR/AED Certification.
• Minimum OSHA 10-Hour Training.
• Clean driving record. You are responsible for any moving violations incurred on the job.
• Must be able to pass a drug screen. Random drug testing is administered to all CDL drivers.
Additional Requirements
• Ability to travel to jobsites within a 60-mile radius of our shop.
• Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, confined spaces, and heights up to 40 feet.
• Availability for extended hours or weekend work as needed to maintain project schedule.
You Might Be a Great Fit If You Are:
• An experienced heavy haul driver from a construction or civil earthwork background who knows how to move iron safely and efficiently.
• Someone who takes pride in their rig, their record, and their reputation on a job site.
• A driver who is comfortable contributing beyond the cab when the day calls for it and sees that versatility as a strength, not an inconvenience.
Why Join Us?
• Compensation commensurate with experience.
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
• 401(k) retirement plan.
• Paid time off and company holidays.
• A family-oriented company with a healthy, people-first work culture.
• Local routes within 60 miles of our shop, home every night.
• Be part of a field team that takes safety, quality, and professionalism seriously on every site.
