About this role

Entry-level ad, built from the skilled laborer posting. Requirements are lowered; the pitch is outdoor hands-on work and a career path.

What changed vs. the skilled role

• Explicitly no experience required — we teach the work

• Removed plan reading, trench-box install, and informal leadership

• Duties are assist / support / learn, not run the work

• Still outdoor, tools, machines, equipment, full-shift physical

• Same cert path and benefits; company still pays for training

• Clear ladder: General Laborer → skilled site work → equipment support → leadership

Job Description

General Laborer — Site Construction David Nice Builders · Williamsburg / Toano, VA · Full-Time Hourly · Field

No experience required. Come ready to work outdoors, learn the trade, and build a career.

At David Nice Builders, we craft construction masterpieces through integrity, enduring relationships, and passionate people. Join our growing civil construction team in the Williamsburg, Virginia area and help us deliver projects that exceed client expectations.

This is an entry-level field role for people who want to work with their hands, learn how real job sites run, and grow into skilled labor, equipment support, and crew leadership over time. We will teach you the work.

Position Overview Our General Laborers work outdoors on active civil sites — grading, utilities, erosion control, and material handling — alongside experienced crew members and heavy equipment operators. You will start with the fundamentals: tools, safety, communication, and keeping the job moving. As you prove reliable and pick up the work, we invest in your training and give you more responsibility.

If you like being outside, using tools and machines, staying busy, and building something you can see at the end of the day, this is a place to start a career — not just fill a shift.

What You’ll Do

• Work outdoors with your hands, hand tools, and crew equipment to support grading, trenching, and utility installation.

• Help operate and tend common site tools such as plate compactors, pumps, saws, and other small equipment under supervision.

• Assist with erosion control: silt fence, inlet protection, and related measures as directed.

• Help load, unload, carry, and stage pipe, stone, lumber, and other materials so the crew stays productive.

• Support layout basics — holding tape, setting stakes, marking lines — as you learn from the crew.

• Work safely around heavy equipment using hand signals and clear communication.

• Keep work zones clean, organized, and ready for the next task.

• Attend daily safety meetings and toolbox talks, and follow the crew’s safety practices.

• Take on additional duties as directed by the Site Foreman or Superintendent as your skills grow.

What We’re Looking For

• No prior construction experience required. A strong work ethic and a willingness to learn matter more than a résumé.

• Comfort working outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and mud for a full shift.

• Willingness to use your hands, tools, and machines every day and take direction from experienced crew leaders.

• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly, walk uneven ground, and keep a steady work pace.

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites within about 60 miles of our Toano shop.

• A safety-first attitude: you wear your PPE, listen, ask questions, and look out for the people around you.

• Dependable attendance. Construction crews run on people who show up ready to work.

Training & Certifications — We Cover the Cost You do not need certifications on day one. We support our people in getting what the job requires:

• CPR/AED — required, or obtained within 30 days of hire.

• OSHA 10-Hour Training — required, or obtained within 30 days of hire.

• Trenching and Excavation Safety — preferred, or obtained within 90 days of hire.

• VDOT Flagger Certification — preferred where the jobsite requires it.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You Are:

• Ready to start a construction career and would rather learn on a real site than in a classroom.

• Happiest working outside with tools, machines, and a crew instead of sitting at a desk.

• Coming from landscaping, warehouse, farming, military, or any physically demanding job and want a trade path.

• Dependable, coachable, and proud of doing the small things right.

• Looking for a company that trains, develops, and promotes people who show the right attitude and work ethic.

Why Join Us?

• Competitive starting wage with room to grow as you gain skill.

• Medical, dental, and vision insurance.

• 401(k) retirement plan.

• Paid time off and company holidays.

• Work within a 60-mile radius of our shop — no extended travel required.

• A family-oriented company with a healthy, people-first work culture.

• A clear path from General Laborer into skilled site work, equipment support, and leadership for those who earn it.

• Be part of a field crew that takes quality, safety, and professionalism seriously on every site.

Start with your hands. Stay for the career. Apply today and tell us why you want to learn this work. $17 - $20
