About this role
At David Nice Builders, we craft construction masterpieces through integrity, enduring relationships, and passionate people. Join our growing team and help us deliver exceptional civil construction projects that exceed client expectations!
Position Overview
We're hiring a Skilled Laborer to join our civil construction field crews in the Williamsburg, Virginia area. This is not a general labor role. We're looking for someone who has been on active sites, understands the sequence of civil work, and can step in with limited supervision to get things done right.
If you know how to read a site plan, work safely alongside equipment operators, and take pride in doing skilled field work without needing to be managed every step of the way, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
• Help support grading, trenching, and utility installation tasks using hand tools, machinery, and remote compaction equipment.
• Support and help complete erosion control installation including silt fence, inlet protection, and related measures per plan.
• Follow trench safety guidelines and assist with installation of trench boxes and shoring.
• Work in direct coordination with heavy equipment operators using hand signals and clear verbal communication.
• Assist with layout tasks including setting stakes, marking lines, and setting up lasers.
• Help load, unload, transport, and stage materials to keep civil scopes moving efficiently.
• Maintain organized, clean work zones and participate actively in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
• Step into informal leadership of less experienced laborers when the situation calls for it.
• Perform additional duties as directed by the Site Foreman or Superintendent.
What We're Looking For
• 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in civil or general site construction. This role is not entry level.
• Working familiarity with trenching, grading, underground utility support, and erosion control practices.
• Ability to read basic site and civil plans and execute related fieldwork with minimal follow-up is a plus.
• A safety-first mindset. You maintain your PPE, know trench safety, and don't need reminders.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites.
• Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 pounds regularly, and sustain physical output throughout the shift.
Certifications
• CPR/AED Certification required (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
• OSHA 10-Hour Training required (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
• Trenching and Excavation Safety preferred (or obtained within 90 days of hire).
• VDOT Flagger Certification preferred where jobsite requires it.
• We support our people in obtaining required certifications and cover the cost.
You Might Be a Great Fit If You Are:
• A skilled field laborer with civil or site experience who wants to work for a company that recognizes the difference between general labor and someone who actually knows the work.
• Someone coming out of underground utility, grading, or excavation work looking for a stable crew with a growing company.
• A dependable, safety-minded field contributor who takes pride in workmanship and shows up ready to perform.
• Looking for a great way to build experience and grow your skills and leadership over time.
Why Join Us?
• Compensation commensurate with experience.
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
• 401(k) retirement plan.
• Paid time off and company holidays.
• Work within a 60-mile radius of our shop, no extended travel required.
• A family-oriented company with a healthy, people-first work culture.
• A team that trains, develops, and promotes people who demonstrate the right work ethic and attitude.
• Be part of a field crew that takes quality, safety, and professionalism seriously on every site.
